The village party he gets before shipping out to the temple.

Up to you as they say here.
In my experience its the ones that can least afford it that put on shows of "wealth" in an attempt to keep up with The Somchais.
The local money lenders love these things, funerals are another money making scheme, the poor can get themselves even further into debt.
Yes those Luk Thung singers are expensive, dont forget the Coyote dancers. None of yer cheapo 100 Pipers, can gain big face if giving Black (even thought its crap). Want to gain even more "face" make sure its a โต๊ะจีน, Chinese table, they work out about 10,000 baht per table, none of yer pla ra rubbish.
In all honesty, it depends on the temple, and their "rules".
I would spend no more than 50k baht, family and close friends, work colleagues only.
Not mentioned, how old is he? Is this being done as a group affair?
Sometimes the schools ship these kids off for a two week temple stay, everything will be arranged by the school.
Not mentioned the "temple" he will stay at, thats another "Big Face" opportunity.

He's 19 and a great kid. 50 to 60k is what the Mrs said.
Group affair you mean more than 1 off to the temple so split costs?

By group affair, suppose there are 20 boys in the same class at school all doing it at the same time, it will be done as one big party, rather than 20 individual parties.
Yes if being a joint affair costs are split.
19?, a bit late, most I know are sent off by the school around 13/14 or 15 years of age, again a joint affair done by the school.

When he was 15 or 16 he was doing the army training thing. I've got no real idea how it all works tbh, long as in that 50k budget there's a box of beer for me I'm ok. I know my Mrs would only spend what's needed anyway and it's her money so It's all good. Just when I ask her what should be a simple answer, I end up wondering why more than once and when it comes to anything Thai, wondering why more than once a day is too stressful.

it depends I guess... My Mrs's nephew went in and it was rumored the parents dropped 60k on the party, we threw some cash in the pot about 5k but that was it. It was an all day thing right up to around 23:00 that night (an evening sit down dinner thing)

The ones that p**s me off are the ones that start about 7 in the morning. SangSom and soda is the last thing I need at that time.
Coyote dancers strutting their stuff and Luk Thung music blaring out, aaaarrrrgggghhh.

Down here at monk does, alcohol is very rarely provided, unless it's his night before party with his friends. So we take our own, with a back up bottle of cola, in case they only have that est crap. You'll need a few cases of beer for the trip to the wat, along with soft drinks.
