Outbreak of encephalitis feared in northern VietnamAt least seven babies in Vietnam’s mountainous province of Cao Bang have died in the past five weeks since April possibly from viral encephalitis, raising concerns about an outbreak, reported the Thanh Nien News on Friday. Cao Bang health department said that the seven babies aged under six months died in one district during April 19 and May 25 and 12 others are under treatment with similar symptoms that include fever, coughing and respiratory inflammation. Experts from the National Institute of Hyginene and Epidemeology suspected that the children suffered from viral encephalitis. The fatalities in Cao Bang are very high compared to only three encephalitis deaths reported from all other places in Vietnam this year. The exact virus and strain in these seven cases have not been identified yet. People can be infected through insect bites, ingestion or inhaling. Children under 15 are more vulnerable. Vietnam provides protection for children under one year with vaccination against Japanese encephalitis. But protection against other encephalitis virus is not available yet. englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/content/165167
