We've all read many a sinsod thread over the years. But how about khongman? Did you pay it? Marriage: a matter of wife and debt?Published: 24/08/2014 at 06:15 AM Newspaper section: Spectrum The recent stories of Hollywood divorces reminded me of one of the renowned acerbic interchanges between Lady Astor and Winston Churchill. Lady Astor: If I were your wife, I would put poison in your tea. Churchill: If I were your husband, I would drink it. Interestingly, irrespective of whether the couple intends to have a traditional or a civil marriage, the betrothal (ie engagement) is treated by the Civil and Commercial Code (hereafter the "code") as a contract. The act states that the betrothal is not valid until the man gives the woman property (khongman) as evidence the marriage will take place. The man is also to give sinsod to the wife's parents in return for the wife agreeing to marry him. more... www.bangkokpost.com/print/428412/

Oh the never ending sin sot debate.
If you really love her or him you'd pay it. Marry a Thai you also marry the traditions and customs.
Or, get hitched out of Thailand. That worked for me anyway.
My wifes son is getting married next year. His girl is a stunner, but her folks are asking for 250k sin sot. Here comes the big fat white atm card on legs! I've got a good wife who told them to shove it. Now it's 50k or my son's not marrying your daughter was the reply. We'll help them by putting enough deposit down so they can buy a decent condo, not filling her parents pockets.
That greedy look and greedy smile then that errrrrrr from everybody when they pick up their cash and gold off the platter It looks ugly to me anyway. Kids just starting out getting their life's together that really need it, not the parents who essentially have selfishly taken it with an ugly greedy smile. Candy from a baby.

So I guess you're wife's not going for a betrothal/engagement and paying a khongman in addition to the sinsot then In the UK people buy an engagement ring - it's supposed to be around 3 months salary I read once somewhere. In Thailand it's pure hard khongman cash

In Thailand it's pure hard khongman cash It's just over complicating everything. It's 1 day, they get married, then it's back to normal the next day. We will help them by putting the deposit on a condo where they can cook inside, not on the balcony, and a lounge chair that converts into a bed for when I visit.

khongman ? Thai version of Gangnam ? Thanks Sp, that reminds me to add that style of dancing to my list "Things you should be shot on sight for doing/performing/saying in public"..............line-dancing is another one. The comment about how much you are "expected" to spend on an engagement ring reminded me of a very good book I read years ago called " The Diamond Invention " by Edward J Epstein. A very interesting story about the diamond trade and how the tradition of buying a diamond engagement ring was created by an advertising scheme. I was not real cashed up when we were married and I only gave the parents about 50,000 baht at the time but I have given them a bit since, spent quite a bit on their family home, renovations, concrete etc. and they are happy, have never asked me for anything really. I have always been the one to offer.
