Scientists develop method of turning human POO into fuel to power homes and carsSCIENTISTS have built a lavatory that turns human waste into fuel for heating homes and powering cars. The space age device treats human waste without using water by using natural biological process to break down excrement into green biofuel. A grinding system inside first converts faeces into a dry, odourless material, which is then transferred to a digestion tank, containing thousands of different microbes. The toilet does not need water or a sewage system and customers can sell the results on. the microbes then biodegrade the powdered human manure to generate carbon dioxide and methane. Using high pressure and a membrane, carbon dioxide is extracted to culture green algae for biofuel while methane is stored for later use as a heating fuel. The lavatory was invented by Professor Jaeweon Cho at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea and installed in the Science Walden Pavilion. This aims to test new devices to reduce the carbon footprint of city dwellers. Professor Cho said: "Our ultimate goal is not only for the new toilet system to save water and operational costs for wastewater treatment plants. "But for us to establish an ecosystem that supports technology innovation and drives economic diversification where human waste literally has a financial value." www.express.co.uk/news/uk/676552/loo-view-make-money-scientists-develop-way-turn-muck-brass

Interesting. Vaguely remember that when American and UN soldiers came to Korea in '50 they complained about the bad smell. Seemed human excrements were used to fertilize the fields. I guess now they use artificial fertilizer and the human 'waste' no longer needs to be wasted, but can be reused. BTW In the Netherlands we have companies which process 'manure'. Maybe they should include homo sapiens in the list of being of which manure is processed. Looking at the website of one I noticed this rather droll ending of their home page "We hope you enjoy our website." www.mestverwerkingfriesland.com/en

Professor Cho. Only a Chinese could think this up.
