"Any time I now see an Englishman refer to the Thais as xenophobes, I'll just have to laugh. A contemptuous, grating laugh. And some Englishmen will get it - others will never do so. They'll never understand the hypocrisy of living in a foreign country while demanding that foreigners be prevented from living in their country. Hail the morons, they have conquered that green and pleasant land. " Read more: bigmango.boards.net/thread/5874/living-past#ixzz4CgXKV4KSExcellent, now how come we agree? Easy, common sense.

^^^^ Oh but I have a Thai wife! Oh ,but I have a Thai child! Oh, but I am (was) British! Oh, but I have white skin! Oh, but I am rich! Oh, but my wealth derived from exploiting! Who? Well, you can't get rich any other way, can you?
Perhaps, but I don't care, I live in Thailand and have a European , British, English, passport. Now which one do I have?
Well it says I am white and superior. I think.

Don't bring your wife to Britain, leave your kids in Thailand too. The genie is out of the bottle. Well done.

Good OP, Buhi - Living in the past is the refuge of the dreamer, the fantasist, the defeated. Different from remembering the past - a perfectly normal and ( hopefully ) enjoyable experience. It's great to reminisce - great to share stories with families and friends. It's a healthy part of the human condition. Living in the past isn't - It's unhealthy - Obsessing over slights, gibbering about sitting on kerbs drinking lemonade while your parents got sloshed in the pub, re-fighting fights that you lost, moping about first loves lost, growling about multiple marriages and relationships going down the pan, snarling at being overlooked for promotion, hatred for those that chose a different path and did well - the list goes on. I don't know anyone that lives in the past that is happy in the present. Not a single person. I agree. A wise man once said something like "Let go of the past, it is of no value to you" or something like that, cannot remember the exact wording but when I first read it I could see the wisdom in his words. No matter what people say, they are living in the present and if you have any sense whatsoever you will try to be happy where you are living now, not where you used to live.

This one is quite good -
“Take it from me: If you hear the past speaking to you, feel it tugging up your back and running its fingers up your spine, the best thing to do-the only thing-is run.” ― Lauren Oliver, Delirium

Thank you buhi, could not have put it better myself. But it does not only apply to Brits, there are many other foreigners living in Thailand who want everything to be just like "back 'ome" and complaining loudly how effed up their own country because of the migrants taking over ! Hilarious, hypocritical bigots. Another great saying I heard many years ago was that "we only see the faults in others that we don't see in ourselves". I live my life by this saying, because the best people I have ever met in my life were honest and called a spade a spade, accepted their faults and the faults in others.

I also agree with his thoughts about the English and "fairness".

Ref to Mick's other comment too:
There was a remark in the opinion page of the Bangkok Post, that F no farage in his Independence Day speech neglected that the ex colonies also celebrate independence from british english colonialism, soon to be joined by the Scots I suspect, the brains behind British liberal industrialisation and wealth.

Maybe they should have thought more of fairness when they drew those borders on the maps........carving up their spoils into blocks and dividing clans.

However you protest a little much. Most of the people living in a foreign country do so under conditions laid down by the hosting country. If they cannot contribute they cannot stay. That is really what the English are saying they want. They also want to make sure that a practice known as "Blackbirding" done in the 1800s in Qld where low paid labor was imported to work the sugar as locals wanted too much paydoes not occur. Few want to stop all immigration.
