Fletch and family are looking to visit Japan next month. First time for Mrs Smile and little Smiles. Many years since I went. Have been looking at Visas, and as far as I can see: British national can visit for 90 days without a visa www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/japan/entry-requirementsThai national can go for arrival date + 15 days jp-vfsglobal-th.com/ (select English version) www.th.emb-japan.go.jp/en/jis/2013/1321.htmAnyone done similar recently or confirm these? UK one looks up to date but you never know. Also the Thai one looks a bit dated. On the UK one, bit surprised to read below. Many countries want 6 months or so extra expiry on the passport these days. Our oldest's UK passport runs out in August so want to make sure of that. Though I guess she could use the Thai one Cheers Fletch

Cheers for that. Had a look at the passports and they are biometric with the little chip. Glad you mentioned it as not something I'd have thought about. Must be a nightmare for people who turned up and didn't have them.

So all booked up now for a couple of weeks in Fukuoka (FUK) later in the month. Last time I went to Japan was about 16 years ago I'm assuming ATMs are plentiful and they take foreign cards, and that credit cards are usable Aside from that any recommendations from anyone on the money side. Changing currency etc? (I think we can manage a THB 150 ATM fee if there is one without ranting on about it on forums ) I remember they had a weird or different phone system. Anyone any other travel tips for Japan? I haven't really looked at it much at all. Mrs Smile has done most of the searching and looking. Poor quality jokes about flying and FUK also welcome

Don't pack a gun in your luggage, denial is no excuse, check with Thai diplomats/police.

Just back from 2 weeks in Fukuota. Really enjoyed the place and travelling a bit within the province. For cash tips: I was a bit surprised there were more places than expected didn't take a credit card. A lot do, but enough that don't to make you have alternatives. As an alternative, sticking your card in an ATM was very convenient, and good rates too, with no additional charge - using my Thai Stan Chart debit card at least. Need a machine that will take international cards, as a lot of the local ones either don't or are all in Japanese. Didn't try any money changers as visa card and ATM card covered everything we needed. The rates on the automatic money changing machines where you put foreign notes in were abysmal though: offerred 2.57 yen per baht vs 2.97 thru the ATM Very polite people. Some nice countryside outside the city. Everything works and is efficient. Used the bus and train quite a bit for getting around. Not many negatives at all. Sometimes difficult that everything is often in Japanese . Bit of an expensive place. Fine to spoil yourself on holiday though as you only live once (at a time). Space/ hotel rooms are a bit small. Great trip
