An acclaimed Australian cartoonist has defended a "racist" caricature after drawing national criticism. Bill Leak's drawing shows an Aboriginal boy being returned by a police officer to an alcohol-swilling father who cannot remember his son's name. The Australian newspaper defended publishing the cartoon as it faced accusations of fuelling race tensions. It comes amid debate about the high incarceration rates of Indigenous youth and a juvenile justice system scandal. 'No apology' In an editorial, The Australian newspaper defended the illustration and pointed to the substantial resources it dedicates to covering Indigenous affairs. "The cartoon points to broken families, the self-perpetuating cause of so much Indigenous misery," it said. "One great obstacle to improvement is the progressive tendency to look away from awkward truths: to prefer their moral vanity over better outcomes for others; and to expend energy on policing 'incorrect' commentary rather than championing needed reforms." A recent news report showed juvenile detainees in Australia's far north being stripped, sprayed with tear gas and, in one case, cuffed to a chair while forced to wear a hood. www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-36983146

What good can come from publishing rubbish like this ? Freedom of speech is one thing but does that give the media the right to openly insult a race of people ? The world has gone mad.

Eh....what about Charlie And this is not a race only some of them. Most are fine but are bought down by the few who are encouraged to continue in the way they do.

I just thought it was in poor taste. There is more than enough racial tension in the world at the moment, confronted with it every day, no matter what country I am in. The world would be a better place without it. And I know from personal experience they are not all like the way the guy was depicted in the cartoon, I spent many years living and working with Aboriginal people in northern and western Australia. Great people, but like white fellas the grog brings out the worst in them.

I also have worked with Aboriginal people and they are great people in general. I have also lived in Perth and had 4 motorscooters stolen in 2 years all of which the police and everyone else knew the perpetrators but could not would not do anything as the poor little children were aboriginal. Not all is good in the state....and trying to suppress comment about the bad does not help. It does not help the many good ones either.

Part of me wants to disagree with you smokie, probably due to national pride (that human curse) and part of me agrees with you wholeheartedly. I think we are more critical of our own people than others are, for some reason, as I am of my fellow countrymen and women. But don't forget your average Aussie is more than likely the product of English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh ancestors, and many of us are similar to northern cousins. Did you have a good think about the way the world sees Englishmen and women when you wrote your opinion of Aussies ? You may get a shock if you knew the way they were described by other nations. I have had many English friends over the years, good long time friends, and I accept them for what they are, and none of us are perfect. There are two things I avoid like the plague when in Thailand - Aussie pubs and English pubs.

I reckon the cartoon was spot on. Good cartoonists make you stop and wonder about things.
You could replace the subjects with people from almost any country, Scotland being high on that list.
To me, the cartoon asks " what chance does the child have?"
And that runs true for far too many children in the world.

I agree with the above statement, its usually white middle class liberal academic types who think they have all the answers. They should get out of their ivory towers in the leafy laned suburbs and see exactly how the other half lives, and the reasons why.

To me, the cartoon asks " what chance does the child have?" And that runs true for far too many children in the world. I had a fourteen year old patient in a Scottish hospital with an abscess on his arm from injecting heroin. His entire family were hooked on the stuff. When I painted the picture of his future to him he just laughed at me. I am convinced he is already dead. So yes....stereotypes are real.
