Australia is on track for its worst Olympic medal haul since the 1980s, as the country’s gradual slide from glory since Sydney 2000 became painfully apparent this week. Languishing in 10th place on the tally, with just 27 medals (seven of them gold) and less than three days left to seek redemption, the team from Down Under could find itself in the embarrassing situation of bringing home just over half its 58-medal haul from Sydney. But it’s not just the medal haul – or lack there of – that’s left Australians – and everyone else - cringing. There have been rows with China, unsporting accusations levelled at Team GB, a fight with the Olympic Village organiser and some rather uncouth references to wedding tackle. Here's Australia's most cringe-worthy moments from the Rio 2016 Olympics: 1. When they picked a fight with Rio's Mayor - then said it was ‘banter’ The Olympics hadn’t even started and Australia started a brawl by complaining loudly about conditions in the Olympic village. Australia’s tough-as-nails delegation leader Kitty Chiller moved the team out of the village over problems with the plumbing and Mayor Eduardo Paes took it badly, telling the Aussies he would install a kangaroo to make them feel more at home. Just how a kangaroo can solve a blocked lavatory is anyone’s guess, but the spat was eventually laid to rest when Chiller wrote it off to “banter” and gifted the mayor a stuffed toy kangaroo – displaying a mastery of passive aggression that could land her a job with Team GB. www.telegraph.co.uk/olympics/2016/08/19/the-most-cringe-worthy-moments-of-australias-worst-olympics-in-d/
