At least 159 dead many more missing. 1 village no longer exists with every building destroyed.

Shocking - makes you question building standards.

...to preserve its invaluable physical and cultural heritage, Italy should be moved somewhere else...

Someone mentioned building standards, a lot of the destroyed building were hundreds of years old. Back then if it kept the sun, wind and rain out it was good to go. If an earthquake comes we will worry about it then. Considering the serious fault line some of these towns are perched on I am surprised they have lasted this long. When I was in Nepal in 2007 I noticed a lot of the stone buildings were erected "dry", no mortar between the stone blocks. Some were rendered on either side and some not. I suppose if a big enough quake hits, as did last year, that bit of mortar is not going to make much difference anyway. i66.tinypic.com/2igf5zc.jpg

...I doubt even one Ethiopian has died in an earthquake: falling sticks and twigs bounce right off them...

I'm going to have a lasagne tonight in sympathy. And a martini. Shaken not stirred.
