A 30-year-old British backpacker in Australia who was hailed as a hero after he tried to defend fellow Briton during a knife attack at a hostel has died of stab wounds in hospital. Tom Jackson, from Congleton in Cheshire, was repeatedly stabbed in the head, face and body last Tuesday night by French national Smail Ayad, 29, after rushing to assist Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 21. The Frenchman had apparently become infatuated with her and grabbed her from her bed and repeatedly stabbed her. Miss Ayliffe-Chung, from Wirksworth, Derbyshire, died at the scene. The three were staying at Shelley's Backpackers hostel in the coastal town of Home Hill, about 60 miles south of Townsville in the state of Queensland. Mr Jackson’s father, Les Jackson, flew to Australia late last week to be by the side of his son at a hospital in Townsville. The father expressed pride in his son’s bravery and thanked the Australian community for their support. "There are many and varied reasons why we are, and always will be, immensely proud of Tom," Mr Jackson said in a statement on Sunday. "His actions in response to this horrific attack only add to that sense of pride." www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/08/30/briton-who-tried-to-help-woman-stabbed-in-australia-dies/
