So said Harold McMillan in 1957 - speech here. news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/july/20/newsid_3728000/3728225.stm He was right at the time, wrong now. We've never had it so good as we have it now, and that applies to the Western world at least: Ten reasons why: 1. Superlative advances in medical procedures since the 1950's. 2. Cheap international travel. 3. The culture of home ownership - rare in the 50's. 4. The Internet - more information to our fingertips that every library combined in the world. 5. The computer and technological age - from satellite TV to automatic trains, cars - list your own benefits. 6. Food supply has never been better - the variety is sensational. 7. Communication and connectivity - more computing power in your smartphone than powered the Apollo space programme. 8. Conscription has been abolished - world war but a memory, at least for today. 9. Convenience - more goods of all types on your high street than Queen Victoria could ever have dreamed of. 10. Wealth - maybe the most controversial - but cast your mind back to your parents and grandparents, many of whom would never have dreamed of having private pensions, etc - that was for the upper classes, not we proles. Can you add more? So why are so many people miserable and fearful?

1. If you can afford it. See America for details, probably the best healthcare in the world.
2. To max the credit cards out, and return to pay them off for a year, before heading off again and maxing out the cards.
3. Tell that to the young who cant even get on the housing market, when I bought my first house it cost about 3 times the average wage, today the same house will cost you about 7 times the average wage.
4 Tis a pity many dont use it to access information.
5, Agreed, lets get them to subscibe to even more channels of junk.
6. Why do so many gorge themselves on junk food, look at your typical High Street and see whats on offer, junk junk junk.
7. Agreed.
8 Bring it back I say, clear our high streets of the idiots that infest them on a weekend.
9 Great if you can afford them instead of maxing out the credit card.
10 agreed if you are smart enough to take one out, many choose to live from pay day to pay day, tomorrow never comes attitude, others get lucky and join a company scheme.

#10 Unions at ICI years ago learned the company was using the fund for interest free loans to themselves for projects. There was bell on about it. They were forced to set up an independent entity. At that time they employed about 70,000 in the UK.

I've walked past the same guy at Argyle St station three times in three days now....a young Scottish bloke who is clearly the true and real definition of a homeless person.
Lot of scammers around which I loathe with a passion as they are stealing from the mouths of these unfortunate and vulnerable people.
Anyway this morning I shoved a fiver in his hand.
My point though is its not better now for many people....zero hour contracts...minimum wage existence and a lack of social housing have make life difficult for many people.
Some better...some worse....life for me I have to say is golden in these days mind you....I just wish it was for everyone.

Whatever I get will be a bonus. I joined not for me, but for those who will be left behind. I despise the "company men" that one year before they retire they are promoted into a job three pay grades above their competance level, oh its good old John, banged rivets in on the shopfloor for the last 30 years, need to see him alright on his retirement. Dont get me started on Union Reps, tossers the lot of them, their socialist values soon go out the window.
