Chiang Mai’s music scene is enjoying something of a golden age. Just over 30 years ago, The Riverside opened its doors and, according to British saxophonist and long-term resident Paul Sugars, the venue became a pioneer of live music in the northern Thai city. Since then, the scene has grown steadily and changed markedly. The 7 most stylish places to stay and eat in Chiang Mai, Thailand Nine years ago, the North Gate Jazz Club opened, offering a space in which musicians would experiment, jamming together in a way that was unprecedented in Chiang Mai. Now a favourite among visitors to Thailand’s “jewel of the north”, North Gate hosts some of the best musicians in the region on a nightly basis. www.scmp.com/magazines/post-magazine/arts-music/article/1999108/chiang-mais-live-music-scene-enjoying-renaissance

I used to go to the riverside bar a lot in the old days, when I first arrived in Thailand. Great venue for live music, almost any night of the week. About 7 or 8 years ago they had a couple of really good resident bands, the first band that came on each night had two amazing Thai girls doing vocals, beautiful voices. One of them did a version of Fields of Gold (that Eva Cassidy made famous), which I thought was as good as the original by EC. Funny thing was that girl struggled to hold a conversation in English. The other band did Santana songs that were a credit to them, the lead guitarist sounded just like Santana, even had the vocals down pat.

I met the farang owner in a cafe in Nimman - he was telling me some hearty anecdotes, including superman syndrome when he had a wife and five mia noi's on the go at the same time. Mentioned that "every man's dream," was in reality a nightmare. Also mentioned that he had around 120 staff between Riverside 1 and 2, and the majority had been with him for years. Said he found it hard to replace staff and was dreading a wave of retirements.
