And what did you do?
I was talking to a supplier when the guy who was best man at my wedding walked in and mentioned the news. This was a guy who would normally pass no comment on any news stories, so we stood agape at what he was saying.
On went the radio, confirmed, but as is so often the case in these major stories, it was only when you see the images the stunning reality sets in.

I was still in school- I think I had just come in from a Rugby game; a sport that I am comically bad at.

I was in my apartment in Tokyo. Woke up and turned on the TV before going to work. I'd assumed I'd got the wrong channel and was watching a movie. Once I realised I wasn't... And the world has never been the same again.
I think only twice in my life have I been this stunned at a news event. The other was waking to hear on the wireless of the death of Lady Diana.

I was in bed sound asleep, early hours in the morning Australian time. For some reason I woke up and was instantly wide awake. I had a desire to turn the tv on, something I would never usually do at that hour. Thought it was a movie, changed the channel, same show, as well as every other channel. I was shocked and could not think of anything else all day.

On one of my projects for South Florida Water Management and overheard the news while listening to Howard Stern (based in New York). After hearing the news made a couple calls and answered a few calls about the news. starts - 2h5m21s into the video

I had just finished a class... and was in the gym. The news was on every tv (eight of them) in the gym. Everyone was just watching the TV in disbelief.

It was a day off in my shift pattern, I was sat in my living room watching as the reports of the 1st tower were on the news. I picked up the phone, and called a colleague at work. "You'll never guess what's just happened across the pond". Not long after I called again. Then I was glued to the TV.

I was at a conference in Ohio, the session was on a coffee break, we were standing just outside the hotel bar area, the TV was on and news started coming through, everyone thought accident initally...remember well the "lock down" in the US the following days, all air traffic shut down and the chaos trying to rent a car, and the increased state of paranoia in the country

BBC has been showing this week in history, and Bush's speech about finding those responsible . Then the West attacked Iraq.

What I think can only add to the pain of the bereaved is the failure of the American authorities to disclose what they know, in particular about the Saudi government's involvement. It took 15 years to get the 2002 Congressional Investigation report released, and even then it was heavily redacted.
Lots of questions remain, including why the Bin Laden family was speedily evacuated following 9/11.
Given the government's predilection for secrecy and obfuscation, conspiracy theories will continue to abound.
