Looks like the R T news feed is suffering from press lag as opposed to jet lag slow of off the mark as a result.

Looking at the pictures the vessel sank quite close to the bank in what would appear to be fairly shallow water. I'm surprised the death toll is so high. There again I don't know how strong the currents are at that part of the river. I don't suppose that, as they were Muslims attending a festival, they would have been wearing voluminous Muslim garb, it would have helped once they were in the water.

More to do with the number of people on board than currents I reckon
Boats can go down very fast, once people realise it sinking which would be some time after the damage (depending where and how much its gathering water) maybe theres 20-60 seconds at most to get all them people off
Old people, trampling, trapped on lower deck asleep etc...

The lower deck ended up a full 2 metres below the surface. The water's not that shallow, even close to the bank. The current is very strong, given all the rain in the north. You can see tug boats struggle to pull heavily laden barges again the current, and holding the barges back going downstream. Pictures show the passengers were wearing normal clothes.

For vessel that size...would suggest overloading, vessel moving too fast, wooden boat into concrete...only going to end badly, current is secondary as a competant/experienced master would know how to factor that in

Very sad, I dread hearing stories like this one. Always find myself wondering why so many people lose their lives when it could quite possibly been prevented. Condolences to all.

Not mentioned, could they actually swim, you would be amazed at the amount of Thais who cant swim.
I watched video footage of the crash, that boat sank fast.
