I did read at one time there were 440,000 foreigners living in Isaan - that was including Japanese etc - not exclusively Westerners. I find it hard to believe 440,000 deluded souls could be so daft. Must be hansam men. Harsh comment. Issan is great, but not for everyone.

The last figure I heard for UK expats was a mere 35,000 - to be fair, that figure is about 4 years old.

It's all statistics which mean not a lot. Most of the Brits are on Tourist and ED Visas so they aren't counted as residents but it's a lot easier to find a Brit than a true Bangkokian or Siamese.

It's a good point There could be another 100,000 Brits living permanently in Thailand, who are basically ex-pats. Does the UK keep figures on their expats around the world?

There's got to be at least half a million Brits living in Thailand, using Thailand as a base or with very strong connections to Thailand. I know UK passport holders that have lived out of the UK for most of their life and their kids have UK passports and have never been to the UK. There are also many Brits who have jumped bail and are living in Thailand. Since the UK cannot even keep track of who should be and who shouldn't be living in the UK I doubt very much that they keep track of UK Expats around the World unless they have been especially naughty.

I don't think there's as many as half a million - I'd guess 150,000-200,000

Should have read, 400,000 deluded souls. In my honest opinion, the happiest guys most contended chaps are the ones who dont live there. They jet in once a month and set up the bar stool in Pattaya, and let their mrs do her thing up country. Lets be honest here, there is Issan and then there is Issan. The only place in Issan I would consider to set up home would be KK, how many guys threw an arrow at a dart borad and said I want to live in the ass end of nowhere, answer, none. There are at leat half a dozen places in Thailand I would rate better than the ass end of buffalo tit nowhere, Chan, Kan, Rayong, Bang Saen, a small one bufalo town town just south of Petchabun no one has ever heard of, what does it matter. Try living in ones of these places full time, no banks, no post office, no 7, 300 kilos to do a 90 day report, no hospital coz the local govt health centre closes at 6 in the evening, yeah wonderful aint it.

I know many dumb and dumbers that don't realise that their ti-lak has half a dozen "brothers" from all over the World.
