A German resident in Buriram was photographed repairing potholes on a road after the giant holes have caused many accidents in his beloved community. Peter Groman, 76, and his wife Kusuma Ngamwong, 51, reportedly joined the locals in Sa Kaeo district to fix the damaged road. Photos of the farang man fixing a Thai road went viral and have drawn praise from netizens. His wife, who posted Groman’s photos on her Facebook wrote: “He came to live in our home country. He’s willing to help us Thais. Today, Mr. Peter helped close the potholes in the middle of Luang road that had caused many accidents in the past. Neighbors have been worried that it would cause even more danger.” Groman, who has lived in Buriram with his Thai wife for five years, told Thai News Agency that he feels happy to help increase safety for motorists, and he will continue doing good to help society. Groman’s inspiration to give back to the community is his wife, Kusuma, who has been volunteering at a local hospital. Together the couple have been helping the community for the past four years without asking for anything in return. Meanwhile, Wit Worawong, director of Buriram’s Department of Rural Roads, said that he was touched to see the foreigner’s kindness. However, he asks that locals should report to the department. The government has enough funds to help, according to them. bangkok.coconuts.co/2016/09/27/farang-resident-has-had-it-potholes-repairs-road-himself-photos

His intentions are good but throwing cement into the pothole of a potholed sub-standard Tarmacked road will only fix the problem for a few weeks. It's a bit like putting a band aid over a gunshot wound or trying to police Liverpool.

I agree, top marks for his good intentions but perhaps the act of concreting the potholes was simply to shame the government into doing the job themselves. No wait a minute, the government will probably approach him to keep going, fix every road in the province, maybe work his way down to Bangkok while he is at it.

Or put him in nick for working without a permit, or fine him for wondering too far from his home address, or make him fill out more forms asking silly questions such as "do you post about your potholing adventures on Social media", or .......... The possibilities are endless when it comes to following the Thai rules.

I have had a strict rule since I first arrived in Thailand in 2005 - FLY UNDER THE RADAR ! An old guy I met in Chiang Rai who had been there a long time gave me that advice. He said he had led a happy life there but he kept to himself and had as little as possible to do with the authorities. I have tried to do the same and so far I have not had any dramas. (I don't have anything in my name, even registered our website domain in my wife's name.) And you won't see me fixing potholes in our soi, it is better quality than most Aussie roads I have driven on. We had a really good PooYaiBan in our area, seems to keep on top of things. My son complained to him recently when there was a blackout. Three year old telling this guy - "Why did you turn the fai off / I was sitting in my house in the dark and it was scary" !

It comes as no surprise that this is from Bururam Province. All road construction and maintenance in this Province is done by one firm. That firm is owned by a well known ex politician who held cabinet posts during the Abisit Government. Subsequently he went on to build a 40 thousand seat football stadium and a world class motor racing track. Not bad for a bloke who was once an elephant mahoot by trade. This German bloke and also the Thai women taking dips in the potholes are now all over the net, and would you believe it the people responsible for repairs have suddenly sprung into action. All hail the power of social media. See....http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-trending-37485461

apart from the no longer banned ex-politician with his football club, the pressure by social media can also get authorities in the West to start doing what they're supposed to do. Mostly accompanied with the time old "why didn't you tell us before" forgetting we did and did and did tell them before.

All very well. But what about the bloody potholes his dad made in our road let alone what he did to our chippy too when he was in the Luftwaffe? Don't forget the football either.

Ah, potholes ! Some of us hate them but the pots have to live somewhere ! I have done a lot of driving around Thailand and have seen some pretty good potholes, but if there were such a thing as the Pothole Olympics the Indians would take home gold, silver and bronze every time. i68.tinypic.com/33u73m0.jpgI didn't see any as good as the one in the above picture when I was in India but I saw some beauties on the road from Varanasi north to Bhadohi. In one place there were big heaps of broken bricks on the road and our van driver was weaving through them like a slalom racer. One of the Indian people who was with us explained the council over-filled the potholes with bricks and the idea was that the traffic driving over them would eventually compact them and repair the holes.

This is what his dad did to the Liverpool bus Mein Gott!! And as for the Kings cross service in London. Buggered of Buckden Towers wrote to ''The Times'' concerning that issue due to his having missed the last train home you know!!! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckden_TowersCertainly no doubt about it, that confounded flying Hun was a menace to society. No wonder his offspring wishes to make amends and merit for his fathers actions.

It seems the example of the German chap worked, that is some like the publicity "Model's pothole protest makes a splash When this woman wanted to draw attention to the poor state of the roads near her family’s village, she hit on an unconventional approach. Sick of the potholes she had to negotiate every time she visited relatives in Thailand's Tak province, the woman, a model named Palm, took a bath in one, while dressed in a towel and a shower cap." www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/09/29/models-pothole-protest-makes-a-splash/

Woman? It was great reading the thread on ThaiVisa about this, all the straight guys talking about how they would love to bag her until they found out that Palm was a Katoey.
