This is a serious (classical) music thread. I did not essentially deviate with Bowie and "Station to Station", as Bowie stated it was misinterpreted ( he was so high on cocaine , he has no clear memory of the recording session) the reference was the stations of the cross. And by inference his own conceited idea of his personal journey at a very low point in his life/near death from drug addiction.
Whether Bowie belongs in the classical music thread is indeed a matter of personal choice. In this instant i thought it did.

Back to the countryside, away from it all Lord of the Rings Sound of The Shire Howard Goodall contends (i agree on this) that 20/21 century music has moved to a fusion of styles. Classical music is a false term ; it refers to the "Romantic" composers of the 18th century. Serious music then went on a path that led to unlistenable noise. Tonal music for instance. A fusion then began, jazz influences, Gershwin through to Bernstein and pop influences, Glass , Reich. Back to Station to Station, heavily influenced by Reich. The later "Low" composition was even more of an homage to Reich. Film music became the new place for full orchestral compositions and it continues to be there subliminally often, explicitly too.

As a youth ,living close to London, i was fortunate to be able to enjoy concerts and theatre, as well as pop groups.
Thus from an early age i never made distinctions of genre.
Some concerts were memorable, others forgettable.
Vaughn William's "Sea Symphony" wonderful.
The above has many Vaughn Williams echoes.Plus folk music, Celtic.
Another was Richard Rodney Bennett premiere of something. Apart from seeing the composer conduct, it fell on deaf ears to me.
