Shocking story, but I'll bet it's only the tip of the iceberg. What amazes me is that although over the years numerous stories have emerged about Thai women (and men) being lured overseas and ending up as sex or working slaves, many still fall into the trap. It's not as though they are fleeing war zones like so many in parts of Africa or the Middle East, or even poverty and starvation, sure many people are poor in Thailand but nobody starves.
Why do the do it? I note that the ringleader appears to be a Thai woman preying on her own Countrymen. I suppose these young people see the glossy magazines and programmes about the good life to be had that the temptation to try and attain that overrides their common sense.
You can't tell them though. My own niece has been for the past couple of years working as a 'masseuse' in Malaysia. She wasn't enslaved and came back to Thailand regularly. We have just learnt that she has been arrested by the police.What the charges are we have no idea, nor have we a clue at present what the outcome will be. We just wait for developments.
I did warn her and try to dissuade her from going, foreign Country with Islamic values is asking for trouble. But she wouldn't listen.There's enough exploitation of girls from poor backgrounds in Thailand's sex industry without the girls going overseas to face the challenges there.
