One needs to remember the policy concerning Roman Legion occupation forces. Any country that was invade and subsequently occupied by the Roman legions was garrisoned by non native legionaries. Any of the local lads who were in the legion at the time would have been kept elsewhere, any of the locals who joined the occupying forces, again same rule, shipped of to places like Gaul or to other occupied regions/countries. That is one of the reasons that England has inherited a wonderful mix of genes and cultures and language over the centuries. It might surprise you to hear that Elizabeth the first received regular complaints concerning the large numbers of ''Blackamoors, Mohammedans and assorted other foreigners abounding in London and other towns and cities in her realm during her reign. Recent excavations in the Winchester have unearthed a number of now identified remains of Arabic origin skeletons in hospital and monastic burial grounds. Some have been identified as suffering from illness which it seems contributed to their deaths, there is surprisingly little or no evidence of violent deaths due to war or other forms of violence others it appears died naturally. Elizabethan England was a maritime nation and it should be remembered traded around the world thus there was a good mingling of the races which as again expanded the very diverse English culture. Traders coming overland from Asia via say The Old Silk Road would arrive say at Constantinople that being the stepping stone to mainland Europe and subquently Elizabethain England and indeed time before that too I am a history lover, [some here say I am a figure from history who crewed the ark with Noah. ] The above is my own work the links below are for any who care to look and once you start it's hard to sop, well for me it is anyway. www.historyworld.net/wrldhis/PlainTextHistories.asp?ParagraphID=gpythehistoryofthebyzantineempire.com
