This topic gets brought up quite frequently on various forums and I always enjoy hearing everyone's thoughts. I'm not living in Thailand right now, but before I did move to Thailand in 2009 I was intently following a thread on Ajarn where a young ESL teacher was doing an experiment. He was attempting to live off 30k and was posting his daily expenses. It was a great thread and you can read it (in article form) HERE I lived in Chiang Mai for over a year on 30k a month. I lived a very comfortable life on that amount, but found it difficult to save a large amount of money. What are your thoughts on 30k a month in Thailand? www.reddit.com/r/Thailand/comments/s855y/bangkok_on_30k_a_month/

you'd barely scrape by if you were a single man or woman.
assuming the lack of savings and unfortunate circumstances you'd be miserable and airport bound before long.

Read the comments in that link. How much would you need to be comfortable in BKK? My experiences are not up to today's I go there sometimes for the weekends. Cheap a chips, cheaper than Macao or Hainan.
Still though, I did know a guy making 30k at ECC and he managed.

i'd need more than 30k.
no need to read the link and admire the amount of mama noodles a man can consume.
i've never understood this fascination about how certain people can spend so little to live in Bangkok.

Here's a Christmas gift for the "I'm rich why aren't you crowd."
As a non-drinker in Suratthani I had no problem living off my 28000 salary at Rajabhat, with an occasional stage gig, even without.
Right now, if I wanted, I could live on 15 bucks a day. That includes rent, lights, Internet, motorbike insurance, petrol, food, ciggies, and Kleenex tissue (I whine a lot).

I could do it, but I don't drink and smoke any more. When I used to drink my average bar bill for the night was 1000 baht +. Tobacco cost me about 300-400 baht a week.
You don't have to live on Mama noodles either, in fact for the same price as enough Mamas to fill you up you can go somewhere like Wororot Markets and buy very good "real" food. Don't know why anyone would want to live on tasteless noodles. 100 baht a day would supply you with enough fresh fruit and veges to sustain a rugby league player.

As with a lot of Jarned threads, it invariably degenerates into tales of the TEFLER sexpat. 30k for many would not be enough to sustain a life of beer and women. Pretty sad. Read below from the link. TwoThreeSkidoo My point is your post makes you sound like the definition of a white knight. Someone who makes themselves feel better about taking advantage of easy pussy by telling themselves they're not like the other farangs here because they're "helping" the girls towards a better future, rather than straight up paying them. I'm not saying this is how you are, but that's how that post sounded to me. I guess the biggest reason being that you said you've done this for what sounds like many girls. Just a few girls and yeah, maybe you really are doing it because you like the girls and want to help them, but when it's lots of them you're not doing it because you want to help them, you're doing it because you like the easy sex. I'm not judging the actions themselves, nothing wrong with either scenario, but do get mildly amused when people can't admit their real situation to themselves, it happens so much here. Usually it's amusing, sometimes it can be frustrating e.g. when you get one of those English teachers with an associates in applied coffee drinking who thinks they're god's gift to Thailand, rather than just admitting they couldn't hack it back home. In this case it was just a WTF moment though.
BigassJohnBKK No I'm totally up front with them and myself about what I'm getting out of it - I love sex - frequent, high-quality and with a wide variety of beautiful and athletic young girls. And yes it has ended up being a large number over twelve years so far, but certainly fewer separate individuals per month than when I used to be part of the regular p2p scene. And true, if I were rich I'm sure they'd prefer 100% straight-out cash payment. However for 99% of them that doesn't really do anything useful for their long term, I've seen girls pulling in 250K a month with nothing to show for it once they get sick or start getting older or have an accident and can't work anymore. Note that if they're lazy and not interested in improving their lives I don't keep them around no matter how great they might be at sex. It's gotten to the point that the sex on its own gets boring, and the more real parts of the relationships - which for me is the "real love" part where I'm actually helping them long-term rather than just funding their next shopping expedition. Every girl that I've actually married has come back trying to return after leaving me, so I reckon I'm doing something right. Sure it's fundamentally p2p, just a different medium of exchange. To each his own, live and let live. . .

it's an interesting topic because it touches on issues that intersect people's knowledge of things on the ground and also issues of lifestyle. great for conversation/debate.
ive always thought that although possible to pull off, you wont have much, if not anything left over for emergencies and/or savings. the fact that you can be comfortably numbs is moot...you need to include saving A BIT as part of what it means to even make money. if you accept that, then of course 30k is not nearly enough.
if your metric is to only see the place for a year or two, and get some experience and such, then its probably worth it. there is a lot of adventure to be had in thailand.
it's a fools game though. if you dont have savings to speak of, and are just making your way, it's a silly place to be working after your 20s.

...there's no one-size fits-all when it comes to income: your 30K-a-month "quite satisfactory" is my abject poverty...some will choose such poverty out of perversity, others will redefine poverty (free sunshine! Look at the moon!), still others will see such income as a step up from Peace Corps wages and a few have no choice but to wallow in squalor...many, however, who have lived (and saved) elsewhere will know that the swamp is a place to vacation or retire, not to work...exceptions abound, of course, but for the most part, they're not very interesting...

I could live on the Krapao at Food Republic and swim in the pool every day.
But then I don't have rent to pay.
If push and shove came together I could live on 300 Baht on an average day....I just wonder how you pay for emergency stuff on that kinda money?

A poorer man can have all the experiences as a richer man but in less comfort. You know, Spartan types ... presente!
I give a toss about table cloths, background music, candles, fine wine glasses and all. Shit, I'll get a bottle at the 7 and drink it in the parking lot!
