I have seen a few complaints about the news feed on this forum.
We have a news feed for two reasons.
1. It's obvious that people can read the news for themselves - however, members can't read everything of interest. So the collective is greater than the individual - we get varied news posted by varied members on a wide range of topics.
2. Comment - if we didn't have a news feed then we couldn't comment on the news. As comment is the lifeblood of a forum, to deny us the opportunity to comment is just plain stupid.
There is one more compelling reason to have a news feed.
By definition, it breathes life into forums as news is - news. It comes at us in streams every single day. There's plenty of new content available to us - content that we can filter.
We have a policy of no Thai politics, no Israeli politics, and similar. We don't need to get lost down those rabbit holes.
Try to keep news items out of the pub, unless they are light hearted.
And go by the assumption that if a news story is of interest to you, it will be of interest to others. Post it and share it.
One more thing.
Some threads are posted knowing that they will not engender a lot of comments - especially in the social commentary forum. We don't all share the same interests, however, many of us enjoy reading in-depth articles.
I say it again.
If you see an article that has interested or entertained you - share it. Look for the appropriate forum and post. If you have enjoyed it, others will too. As a rule of thumb, post the first three or four paragraphs then add the link - that means that we are abiding by the "fair use," policy.
Don't post entire articles for that reason - we could be accused of conflicting with copyright. Plus - many are way too long. Give people a taste then let them decide of they want to click through.
We are all content creators.
