My local TOPS has recently upgraded its range of ready meals. It now includes three sandwiches. One is a "pork floss" sandwich. The other is a tuna sandwich with a a sugary mayonnaise. Can't remember the equally uninspiring third. I'm pretty sure that none comes close to a great invention. |

I hate it when someone goes to the provinces and brings me back some as a gift "mmmm, pork floss, my favourite, thank you". |

I will amend writing as my wife is dyslexic, can barely read or write; so I will go for communication. Arts, music, drama, language. The way for eons.most people, with out education learnt , will add dance, a synthesis of music, art, drama and emotion.
Another amendment, I place language lower than the other arts. Language is different throuout the world. My Thai skills are woeful, but I communicate. My English skills likewise, at best a dim hope of expression.

Without language, communication, nothing to print.
Yep, being pedantic, but stand by my previous post.
Before print, must come reading.
Reading was denied, is denied, to most.
Story telling, dance, ritual always the basic means of cultural continuity.
But not being pedantic; yes the printing press revolutionised Western civilization.
Lot of people were not, are not, Europeans.

"Studies in Thai History," by David K Wyatt.
I wonder how many Thai will read this book.

I glanced down, saw a book next to my bed. "Studies in Thai History," by David K Wyatt. I wonder how many Thai will read this book. they may have their own to read. I note that in the bibliography of his Short History of Thailand he does not have a lot at many Thai primary sources. |

Reading a range of books, ancient to modern is part of Western education, has become the norm for understanding .
Thai do not read, only text books necessary to pass a predictable test.
You criticized a book for lack of primary sources. That indeed demonstrates that you are educated, well read.

My point is that you insinuated that Thais do not read English Languagebooks hence lack knowledge. That comes from many sources and Thai people use many that the west does not. |

I have posted on here before, when I worked as sub editor at The Nation" newspaper, my boss,was amazed I read for pleasure. She, yes she , 10 points to Thai, head of the education department.
"I only read if I need to,".

I refuse to grow old.
Was with my friend, the one who has no father, but regards me as his father.
He and wife and her mother, had been away for a week. They had a holiday, sure , a whole week, at Chiang Mai area.
"Boy, show me the photographs,".
"Well that's crap, been there, hey hold it, that's a great picture, no crap, wow good one, all those bloody photos with you and your wife in, not interested,".
Yes we are very close and I can speak to him.
His mother came by, complaining, as she does.
"Boy, you need to go and get the stocks, we are low on this, this, this, this, do not need that, more of that ......"
I laughed.
Then mother turned on me.
" I am old, tired, I have had enough of doing this,".
I laughed,
You will never stop doing this until the day you die, you love it,".
We both laughed.

Greatest invention ........ the condom, without it God only knows how many more idiot relatives I'd have. As for Thais reading angrit books, took a Thai mate to my local on Friday and there's a book exchange, I was surprised he picked up Boris Johnsons The Churchill Factor, he sent me a message this morning and said he finished it already. The funny thing was I picked up a cook book  |
