My corner shop gets everything I ask for and charges the same as 7/11, but cannot supply fresh meat, vegetables etc. It is accepted.I do shop sometimes at Big C, for all those mundane things. The local wet market has all I ever need for one day. I remember in England having a huge freezer, because I had to. Not now.

I'm famed for loving stock - my business is always rammed full of stock. My attitude is that I can double or in some cases treble, my money on stock - I can't do that with cash in the bank.
The other advantage, as a stockist, is that I can drive down the price I pay. So far, so self-praiseworthy.
The downside now is that I have lost my enthusiasm for dealing with the public. I used to revel in it, not any more. I like to lie to myself it was due to all those TV shows telling customers how to haggle with retailers, and informing them of their "rights."
Ebay's change of policy regarding forbidding retailers from reviewing customers added to it. Ebay moved from being a good and fair place to doing business to being a chancers charter.
For example, I would send a pallet of laminate flooring, on occasion, one or two of the packs would be damaged in transport. Fair customers would point it out then say "I'll try to use the boards at the end caps." A lot would come back and say it worked out perfect - in other cases I would send down a replacement pack. Fairs fair.
Overnight it changed as to where we were receiving complaints like "I've fitted this floor and don't like it, either come and collect it or give me a full refund." They would then raise a Paypal dispute that put the funds beyond reach for three weeks.
I won every Paypal dispute, but that's not the point. It was brain damage. Every transaction became a gamble so I closed off that business model.

Agreed, In Thailand it is like going back in time. As a kid I went with my mother to the local street market every morning. To be honest I was oblivious of how things had changed until I settled in Thailand. Sad that now the 7/11, Big C , Tesco and shopping malls have destroyed the personal customer retailer relationship. Add , my grandfather had a grocery shop in Smithfield market. Best cheese ever and grandmother's steak and kid the no description. I taste it in my mind.

In the early days of Borough Market one stall sold a chicken mushroom and peas pie that had a pastry that simply melted in the mouth. The filling was simply outstanding and the price OK. These things were heaven I tell ya....sadly now gone....I always imagined tbey were made by a little old lady somewhere who knew her onions inside and out....you can't replace that kind of knowledge.

You remember the early days of Borough Market?
You're older than I thought. The things you must have seen over the last thousand years!

I walked into the bathroom of a 7-11 recently and found that a new 7-11 was opening inside the bathroom of the 7-11.

In the area I used to live in the Ma & Pa shoppe would pull in profits of over 150k pcm, 7 11 opened 400 metres away and they now sell ice for 5 baht a bag My new area there is a 711 franchise 120 metres away and a corporate store 40 metres away, just outside my front door & as of a month ago another corporate store opened 320 metres away with the new concept having a chemist onsite from 0800-2300. Wedged in between is a mini Tesco which is absolute shite IMO. Not a Ma and Pa shoppe left in my area so I now have to wait until 17:01. What always amazes me is the turnover seems fairly low, same faces for over a year now and earnings around what ? 11,00 pcm ?

I'm thinking of writing a letter of complaint to the junta.
