 A Siamese fighting fish in the colours of the Thai flag has been bought for 53,500 baht (£1,200) at an online auction. The fish, which has blue, red and white horizontal stripes, is believed to have sold for more than double the previous record for the species. Photos of it went viral after Kachen Worachai, 40, who breeds Siamese fighting fish, or Betta, as a hobby, posted them on a private auction group on Facebook. On Thursday, Kachen, a convenience store owner, said he expected the fish to sell for a few thousand baht. On the second day of the auction, bidding had reached 10,000 baht. I had one that drowned, origin ally a pair. He'd chase the female around the tank non stop, like a dog after a bitch in heat. So I put him in a floating chamber, with a lid on to stop it jumping out. It had air holes. Over night, she emptied the floats of air, and being a labyrinth fish he needed access to the surface.

The first time I ever visited Pat Pong was circa 1980. I was in one of the upstairs bars where apart from the real live fornication that took place they had a small fish tank. In this tank were two Siamese fighting fish. Different colours separated by a perspex sheet. A time was set for the sheet to be lifted.
Having been suitably entertained by the naked Thai couple the time arrived. The amount of money changing hands was incredible. Of course at that time I didn't speak a word of Thai so much of what was going on was going over my head.
The sheet was lifted and the fish went for each other. It was all a let down really, the so called fight lasted less than 5 seconds before one fish latched onto the other and it died. Back to the sex show - much more entertaining.

I've seen the fish in question is 2 years old. I think we need some fish, paint brushes and some Dulux paint, what a great business idea at 53k each...only need to paint a few a day and flog em on e-bay.. |
