I'm a comforable few mins from the ghetto....I can dip in to the one or two places worth visiting from time to time or out to Thonglor just as easily.
Five mins I am at Asoke and easy travel anywhere in Bangkok.
Fifteen mins by boat and I can be seated next to rgs in the burbs sipping the finest whisky Bangkok has to offer.

Of course we also have the country pad complete with 25m swimming pool and fabulous streetside dining a short walk away.
Its good to have options.
Also love having the best OJ stand across the road there....60 Baht OJ....but worth every satang.

My ghetto days are over.
The one problem I always had was not getting there; easy, pick up the sky train at Udom Suk; but getting home, when a little inebriated and annoyed at all those sharks pretending to be taxis and the boys in brown assisting them.
My solution was to wait at the lights on Asoke junction, when red, walk the queue and ask metre on? Takes a few minutes.
I always gave a big tip to the good guys who got me home, also gave them the choice of crawling along Suk to Udom Suk or go across the lights., the long , but easy way; pick up the expressway to Bang Na and home fast. The expense was not a concern, safety was. The sharks are dangerous and bad drivers.

I have been to Bangkok so many times over the years but only for short spells, and could not imagine living there. Maybe if I was 30 years younger, maybe. My wife and I lived in a condo in CM city, just behind the Night Bazaar Road, for about 5 years before we built a house out of town. We are still only 15 minutes from Chang Klang but it feels like we are way further out. Nice drive along the river road to get into town with no traffic lights, yet. We went from this - i63.tinypic.com/2z686rp.jpgto this - i66.tinypic.com/fx6lnm.jpg

You would not have lasted long where I was living and working in the Great Sandy Desert doing oil and gas exploration seismic work. Where I live now is rather exciting compared to that.

Not mentioned, ladyboy pickpockets, tailors touts, massage parlour touts, the hawkers and peddlars and other assorted riff raff I had to fight my way through just to get to a bar. On arrival it was surly DGAF service and pestered for lady drinks. I must be getting nostalgic, I remember the days you would be met with a wai and a sawadee ka, escorted to a table be given a cold face cloth and asked what you wanted to drink. The sanook has long gone, its all money these days. Up where I am, no problem getting a taxi, no no meter nonsense. Sitting surrounded by office workers, sales girls, nurses, students etc etc, heck there are times when they are buying me drinks, natural laughter as Face Ache posts are translated, not a hint of violence in the air. Up my way I can go for a night out for 500 baht, money isnt the problem, I just want a hassle free night out. The Ghetto, no thanks, nothing to offer, best left to the two week millionaires.

Where I was the roo and donkey shooters used to shoot up (with rifles)all around the caravan whenever they came for a visit....started from about half a mile away and they were always drunk.....only got one bullet hole in the van. I guess I lived in an exciting neighbourhood with their camp only 10 miles away.

The only good thing I remember of Suk were both food related - the little kebab shop on Soi Nana just off Suk, and Tony Ramonas. The rest of it that I saw when I walked it on many occasions, sucked !

Well said rg, your description of a night out in that part of town and what is involved is just how I remember it. Amazing how many drongos lap it up, get ripped off and harassed every night and go home saying they have just experienced the "real Thailand". Not my cup of tea, but it does take "all sorts". ( The thing that literally gets up my nose these days is the auto exhaust fumes. Maybe I should not have given up smoking because I didn't notice it back in the day. The traffic noise is another thing I don't seem to handle anymore. It is so quiet here where we are now, took me a while to get the hang of not going to sleep to the sound of boy-racers tearing up and down the sois around us or the tuk-tuks bringing the drunks home at all hours )
