Twenty-two percent of Britons have never travelled on a plane and one in four have never visited a capital city in Europe, while nearly a third (29 per cent) have never travelled outside of Europe, and a fifth have never been to a beach, according to new research. In the survey of 2,000 Britons by Kayak, a travel search website, eight per cent of respondents said they have never travelled abroad. More than half (52 per cent) of those surveyed have not been abroad in the last year, while 30 per cent haven't ventured overseas in the past five years. Thirty per cent stated the reason for their lack of travel was that it's expensive, while a fifth found it to be too complicated. www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/news/a-quarter-of-britons-have-never-been-on-a-plane-visited-a-beach-or-european-capital/

"Never seen a beach"
I was lucky then to grow up in paradise.
Dundonians however drew the short straw.

So, putting it more positively:
78% of Britons have travelled on a plane. 75% have visited a capital city in Europe. 71% have travelled outside of Europe. 80% have been to a beach.
92% have travelled abroad. 48% weren't abroad last year, but 70% have been abroad in the last 5 years.
Glass half empty muchly?

According to my Ozzy mates, 100% of the Poms have never seen a shower or a bath.

Putting you usual spin on things AyG ? I thought my usual spin on things was one of relentless negativity (or "accuracy" as I prefer to think of it). On one of the rare occasions that I try to be positive I get slapped down. Still, lesson learnt. I'll endeavour to be unswervingly negative in future.

You are not likely going to be "slapped down" by me no matter what you post, especially not on this forum, which I have a lot of time for. But you will know it if I ever do.

(that should keep him busy for a while) How about "only 36% of Americans own a valid passport"? Source: mic.com/articles/28780/why-64-of-americans-have-never-left-the-u-s#.11v2gKfK4(That is assuming, and it's a dubious assumption, that America is part of the modern world.)

Britons - a fifth have never been to a beach I would think that number would be doubled for Thai’s. Some are grateful to learn the news. Me (an American) being one. I’ve visited a few countries in the past and have been among some American travelers. I’ll do my best to move away because some (46.2% - not all) can be embarrassing.

Amazing really considering that the furthest point from the shore in the UK is only 72 miles - just over an hours drive. Doesn't surprise me though. In 1980 I was a security officer in a large London department store south of the river. A work companion of mine was a young woman about 23 years of age. She told me that she only once ever seen the sea and that was when she went by train on a day trip to Southampton.

Most year 4 kids have a trip to the seaside.
