The extra "u" in colour et al comes from the Norman occupation of England in the 11th century... Yeah. Old. A superfluous unneeded keystroke.

English spelling was very variable even up to the time of Shakespeare, and in early editions of his work he used -or and -our word endings equally often. However, the spelling became standardised as -our. It was Noah Webster who was responsible for removing the "u" in -our as part of his efforts to simplify English spellings for simple Americans in the early 1800s. Before then Americans had been spelling the word correctly with -our.
