Last night for the first time in four years.
I met her when she was two days in from the mountains.
She was hilarious, sweet, gentle - and she spoke more by facial expression than her mouth.
Smokie met her one day and agreed.
Then she became educated in the way of the coterie that stand one removed from bar girls.
Keeper of dreams, pretensions of love, hoping for the young farang to whisk them away to a new world.
In the meantime, just leave 1000 baht on the dresser cos "need money."
I saw her last night.
I couldn't believe my eyes.
If you had asked me, by now she'd be living in Hamburg with a baby in tow.
Neither.
She's looking sharper - in that way a mountain girl develops her style on the farang coin.
Now she is the raconteur to the grey brigade.
The guys with watering eyes and corpsid skin.
Maybe they'll die soon, so it's okay to dream that this girl loves them as she whispers
"Buy me a drink, darlink"
I saw a ghost last night.
That sweet mountain girl is dead.

The girl only existed in your head.

This is a true story and no I have not been drinking. In 2005 I was doing my second month of travelling around and up and down Vietnam, was staying at the Blue Moon Hotel in Nha Trang. Walking back to my hotel one night along the main drag that follows the beach and I saw an attractive young lady standing next to a motorcycle on the footpath ahead of me. Noticed she was very attractive and well dressed. As I passed her she asked me where I was going, and I thought - "Oh dear, this is not going to end well" (found out for myself many years ago that if anyone in Asia asks a stranger where they are going it usually means they are after something) Told her I was just walking back to my hotel, alone, the hotel that does not allow guests to bring ladies off the street home with them. She said that if I went with her instead back to her place she would give me - "Good-time-sucky-sucky" !!! I could not believe my ears, had only ever heard that expression used in tacky 1980's era Vietnam war movies. I said to her - "Where the hell did you learn that" ? But she got a bit embarrassed about the whole encounter.
