Many of the 'weet' in coffieshops contains traces of chemical pesticides. This the television program "bad shit!" of KRO-NCRV reported after an investigation by the government institute RIVM.
The institute did the checks for the Ministry of VWS and investigated 25 samples taken from coffieshops in the country (ed: so not only from Amsterdam). In 23 samples traces of pesticides were found.
According to the RIVM de pesticides in the 'weet' doesn't cause harm to health as only minor traces were found and these were below the maximum acceptable for vegitables and fruits.
"But apples you can wash or peel, 'weet' you can't as you smoke it", said the cannabis investigator Arno Hazecamp from Leiden. Chemist Sytze Elzinga warns "Through inhalation the toxicity of the substances is ten times higher. It can cause damage to liver and other organs."
The Netherlands has about half a million cannabis users, according to the program. "Criminal cannabis cultivators may be more inclided to use pesticides (in larger quantities).
