I've not been to Africa for a while, and my daughter suggested we go to Cape Town and do the Garden Route in August.
How long should I allocate? I'd like to be in Mexico by end August.

I've driven the Garden Route. It's absolutely stunning. August should be OK weather wise, not too cold, maybe some rain. I did it East to West, ie Durban to Cape Town. Set yourself for a 10 day to 2 week leisurely journey, stopping at any place you fancy along the way. Mind you this was in the late '60's when Apartheit was in full swing, things may have changed considerably since then.

If you like the warm, i would wait a tad, typically runs 8 to around 20 in August,
November/Dec and April my favourite months in CT
Jan/feb can get too hot with the berg winds and of course lets not forget the bush fires
But yes garden route good, better get used to nutcase drivers same same Thailand, allow 2 weeks minimum, and would do a few days in Cape Town itself before setting off
