The early years of commercial air travel are often touted as the “golden age” – when air hostesses were glamorous, passengers were both dashing and polite, and everyone got the first-class treatment. But perhaps travelling in the Sixties and Seventies wasn’t as ritzy as it appears. Indeed, when Quora users were asked what air travel was really like back then, many lifted their rose-tinted glasses to reveal the uncomfortable truths. Quite frankly, we’re glad we missed out on it all. The plane “reeked of smoke” “Having a smoking section in the plane was like having a ‘peeing section’ in a pool,” quipped forum user Robert Moutal. “It was a horrible, horrible experience because there was no escaping the smell.” www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/news/what-air-travel-in-the-1960-and-1970s-was-really-like/

Even in the 80s I remember the smoking sections and some of the planes still have the rectangle spot on the arm rest where the ashtray was

Yes, you can tell how old a plane is by looking at the armrests for ashtray holes. I still remember sitting next to big fat bastardos who chain-smoked the whole flight.
When I hear people complaining about needing a smoke on the plane I laugh at them. Even when I was smoking I never craved one during a flight.

Interiors are generally replaced at major inspections.

Then why are the ashtray spots still visible on some planes ? Probably because you are flying on a plane that still allows smoking.....eg - Air Algeria, Cubana, Garuda, Iran Air of course you will still find them in plane toilets as they are legally required there to prevent people disposing of cigarettes in the towel bin.

Then why are the ashtray spots still visible on some planes ? I believe its an FAA requirement, i remember reading somewhere that ash trays havent been phased out "that long" and even though smoking had been banned out right for many years, the FAA required ash trays in case some did decide to light up..
