The true story behind the deepest dive in history
It was at 31,000ft below sea level, a depth that would submerge Mount Everest, that a loud, low-pitched crack rang out. With it came a juddering motion and the realisation that something very bad indeed had happened.
The date was 23 January 1960 and Lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard were ensconced inside the steel submersible Trieste, within close range of the bottom of the deepest part of our ocean (known as Challenger Deep) in the Pacific’s Mariana Trench, mid-way through a record-breaking dive.
They checked their instruments but found nothing awry, so continued. “Clearly nothing major had failed,” says 85-year-old Walsh from his home in Oregon, his voice a lackadaisical West Coast drawl. “At that depth, the pressure outside the submersible is about six tonnes per square inch.
