He owns a resort - five chalets. Wakes at 7.00, and is on the go all day excepf a 2 hour break in the afternoon. He often uses that break to go shopping for the resort.
His wife is in the resort kitchen from 7 till 2.00, then 5.00 till 9.00. He has cleaners and gardeners, and all the usual bills associated with a business.
He grosses £100 a day from his chalets.
He says he has a better life here than in the UK.
He must have had a hell of a life in the UK.

More importantly whats his net ? gross means nothing ...lets assume net 50 quid/day net for the purposes of argument 1500 quid a month, 18k year, below average salary in thr UK, at 26k p.a. but more than a state pensioner If he was netting 100 quid a day, ie 3k/m - 36k/p.a. tax free maybe not such a bad screw living in Thailand So all relative i guess

I am always sceptical when I hear figures mentioned by these resort owners and the inflated prices they are trying to sell them for. I drive by loads of them most days, the only days I see them busy are either the weekends, new year or songkran, rest of the time they lie empty. No doubt this one is different.

Thats why i asked what the net was, ? as its the net number which determines whether the money is "ok" versus being "dire" If he nets 36k year, its not rick star money certainly, but wouldnt be a "bad" living...i am inclined to think he is not netting 36k year off this venture, maybe gross, but not net

My dad's about to build a resort style place the same in Cambodia. It's his retirement dream and loves talking about it. Who cares if it only makes 500b a day is his thoughts. Long as he's happy. He's been busy buying land next to that big temple where all the tourists go for the last ten years now.

Working hard and making 100 quid a day (net), that sounds like a good life to me.
As I'm on the road patroning hotels and such right now, I'll share an anecdote from earlier this afternoon. I'm in Loikaw, capital of Kayah State, bordering Thailand. It's the first time in my 18 days of touring I've come to a place I've been before. I went to the hotel I stayed at last time I was here, and they were fully booked. I had done some looking into places here online, and I knew there was a new place, just half a block away run by a German guy and his Burmese wife. I enquired there.
$90US for the cheapest room. That's crazy, and I told them so. I'm now in the same neighborhood, nice room with everything I need, $25/night. Who does this German think he is asking $90 a night for a boutique hotel in Burma fercrissakes? I suppose he's catering to the wealthy German silver haired tourists, which they might get 10 a month.

It's £100 a day gross. From that he gives a free American breakfast. Then from there you can deduct the rest of the expenses. I'd say he'll be lucky to be clearing £12000 a year taking jnto account seasonal fluctuations.
For a 80-90 hour week.

If the guy is retired and looking for something to fill in his time, yep I can get it. Moving half way round the world to work those hours, sorry I dont get it.

If the bloke was taking home 100 quid a day net, which 4500baht everyday then probably is a comfortable life. Running a resort though is damn hardwork. As blether says a lot of these resorts are empty half of the time.
Last year when i was looking for a place for my new centre we must have looked at around 40 to resorts in the Chiang Mai area, all of tge for either rent ir sale. Not one of them was successful. The place I got was a total failure, like a Thai version of Fawlty Towers.

A hundred a day isn't too bad if you've got essentially free accommodation and food included.
