Kids loved 'Nijntje' (aka 'Miffy') and even growups (especially grandparents) "Dick Bruna, 'spiritual father' of rabbit Miffy, dies at 89 Dick Bruna, the Dutch "spiritual father" of Miffy, the white rabbit who enchanted millions of young children around the world for more than half a century, has died at age 89, his publisher announced Friday. Decades before Instagram made square images immensely popular, illustrator and artist Bruna understood their power. For years, his Miffy books were printed in a square format." www.springfieldnewssun.com/news/world/dick-bruna-spiritual-father-rabbit-miffy-dies/A3DrRcQkQDTnTkbsuFiiJO/

This unlocked a little sector of my brain that has laid dormant for many, many years.
I had a miffy picture book when I was about 3, it had good calming qualities when it came to bedtime.
Never seen any modern animation though, can't watch it I'm too old for that now.

At 61 I'm still young enough to enjoy watching these clips, preferably with some grandkids around me PS before showing this clip hide the crayons

I've long wondered (but not wondered enough to find the answer) why the character has a Welsh name, Miffy being a form of Myfanwy. Anyone known?

Surprised they didn't make it more true-to-life and have the classroom overcrowded with black bunnies, yellow bunnies and ME bunnies.

Never wondered that much about Nijntje, but you should remember that the first book came out in the fifties previous century around the time I was born near Arnhem. First (slightly) coloured schoolmate I had was in first year secondary school (at 11). Mind you, in the 'big' cities like Amsterdam they did have more colour, from Surinam amongst others. Of course, for many years I knew about the darker colours. After all the Netherlands is famous for it's 'zwarte piet' (aka black peter)

'Nijntje' is a diminutive form of 'konijn' (English: rabbit). The hard 'k' is more difficult for children to pronounce. Also it's like having 'little John' called 'Johnny'.

Just reading a bit more, about nijntje that is The Dutch wiki page says "in most countries the name nijntje is unpronouncable and changed to Miffy. Now more-or-less standardized to Miffy other names have been used in the past "Over de belevenissen van nijntje zijn dertig boeken verschenen.
