Sad news, condolences to his family.
In 2007 I went up as far as The Hotel Everest View, which is at an altitude of 3,962 m (13,000 ft)
Everest base camp is a few days trekking past that, at 5,380 m (17,600 ft)
English guy was with me when I went there, there were only the two of us with guide and a bearer. I only took a small backpack as I was only going as far as Namche but he went on the the Base Camp. He emailed me when he got back to the UK, said it was hard going by the time he got there, and he was fit and a non-smoker. Also said the place was filthy and he got sick as soon as he got there.
Highest I got to was 5,200 mtrs which was a high pass on the trip from Kathmandu to Lhasa on the Friendship Highway. Got out of the van and the wind/chill factor nearly knocked me over. Coldest I have ever been. And breathing hard even just sitting there doing nothing. Cannot imagine what it's like climbing even higher than that.

A young pal went to Base Camp recently, said it was the hardest thing he ever did. This guy is a tree surgeon, fit as a fiddle and used to working in difficult and dangerous conditions.

I've been up it three times.
Don't know what's wrong with you.
I made a fortune selling Marlboro at the summit last time.

Holy shit ! You were right blether, he is off his rocker. Some Walt probably told him that story when he was hanging off a bar in Nana one night and he has decided it was him who was selling fags up there !

I've only been up Scafell Pike, Lake District, more than enough for a Dutchman. The stony part near the top was tricky especially going down.
