Now it seems as if she wished to remain in Australia for a further year,so what might have been her reasons for that.
Bearing in mind she claims to be a ''qualified nurse,'' surely her professional background would have qualified her for a visa extension.?

Apparently - You can't work for the same employer for more than six months. If you want a second year extension, you have to do 12 weeks on a farm in the first year. The Hurricane is flying to Australia tomorrow on a working holiday visa. She has to go before her 31st birthday in May.

Don't know what happened to this girl, can only go by what I read in the story, but this kind of work is usually what they call "piece work" which means you are not paid by the hour, you are paid depending how much you do. Pickers are paid so much a kilo or bucket for whatever they are picking. I worked like this in the surf ski and surfboard industry in Byron Bay, 74-79. Company called Byron Bay Surf Craft, later Sky Surfboards. We were paid so much per job performed, as in shaping blank, glassing blank, sanding, finish coating and pin-striping (my job) and glossing. At one stage I was making more in a day than a top class bricklayer, which really p**sed them off. If you do little work you receive little pay. Some of those backpackers work hard (and party hard) and make good money.

It all boils down to money. Those who have lots of it don't suffer the same problems the poor do.

Surely those illegal immigrants accepting low pay drive down salary levels and take away jobs from desperate, unemployed real Ozzies ?

They cover the case where an Australian student has roots in say the UK and wishes to sta an extended time. It is hard to do this without working but it is good for the student to see his British relatives if he has them and see what an overseas country is like. They are supposed to be issued to graduates etc. They allow a limited amount of work to be done. In that case there is a reciprocallity between freedom of Australian and British tourists to get the benefit. The same agreement also applies with Thailand but Thailand issues hardly any of these visas to Australians but hundreds if not thousands go to Ausralia on them.

It is very hard to find Aussies who will take those jobs, no matter how much they are paying. Even it was the Award Wage, for farming it is probably the lowest rate going. A lot of people don't want to go out to these remote areas to work. They prefer the bright lights and that fortnightly dole check. I imagine some of those unscrupulous, tight-fisted prickle farmers would prefer to have backpackers anyway, easier to rip them off.
