How can we define ''snobs or snobbery?
Is it a self perceived social standing based upon ones position in society, occupation, education based, where one lives, ones lifestyle, family, money etc?
What's your take on the matter and are we all snobs to a greater or lesser degree?

East Kilbride in Scotland is polluted by snobs.
The reason? Being a new town, people had to apply and be approved to move there. That included a home visit and interview process.
At the time, the working class were offered "back and front doors." The managerial class were offered the perceived sophistication of living in a new fangled "gas flat."
The end result was a town full of up themselves forkwits who thought they were superior cos they were selected.
I jest you not.

Pal of mine told me a cracking story of Jewish snobbery. He was a TV engineer and went to a house in an executive part of the city. He knocked the door, and the lady requested he walk round to the back door. Refused. Cos the TV was in the sitting room at the front of the house. Angered, the lady demanded he wait while she put newspaper down on her carpet so he could walk in. 'I'll take my shoes off," he replied. "No, I don't want the likes of you on my carpet." "Well bring the telly to the front door and I'll fix it in the garden." "Don't talk stupid, I'm not carrying the TV to the garden." "Well I'm not walking across newspapers to get to the telly." And he left. Got back to the office and there was a request "written in fire," for the senior manager to call a disgruntled customer. So in his role as the senior manager for Clydesdale Electrical ( the Scots will remember Clydesdale ) he called. "Your employee.....insolent....TV......newspaper.....garden......refused," blah blah. He lustened intently with hus staff trying not to laugh as they listened via the internal exchange. "Can you describe the engineer that came out?" He asked. "A small, pudgey man. Receding hair and glasses, driving a blue car." "That sounds like me," he said. Staff collapse in laughter. "To be fair, I could do with losing a few pounds. Mrs x x x x x, We're short-staffed today which is why I came to your house. So it was me that you were talking to. In my role as senior manager of this department, I am now informing you that you are barred from this company." And to rub it in, he had his secretary send a recorded delivery letter to her confirming the ban.

But some great bands came out of there. Violent place. All the Glasgow scheme's had a presence their and continued their turf wars. I remember being at the Stuart Hotel in 1984, when we still had afternoon closing. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a queue of 60 people waiting for the var to open.

Every employee that has ever worked for me will tell you my two golden rules in my business.
1. Go home safe.
I go nuts if I ever see any of my employees doing anything that risks personal injury. Nuts.
2. The most important word in the company is NO.
I encourage my staff to reject business. If my staff feel that the customer is a potential problem, they reject.
I reserve the right to inquire as to why they rejected the business ( normally cos I'm just being nosy ). I never overrule my staff in this regard. Never.
I think each and every one of us, in every job, in every walk of life, has seen a situ which you can tell is going to become a major, intractable problem.
A lot of these problems boil down to aggressive/erratic/stupid/snobbish individuals. Put an end to it before it starts.
Just say no - we don't want your business.

Many years ago a middle aged couple moved into the house next to my sister. Woman reminded me of that "Bucket" woman from that English comedy series. She used to sit in the back seat when her and hubby went out, he opened and closed the car door like a hired driver. All the furniture in the lounge room was covered in white sheets, he was not allowed to sit in there ! Had to go outside for a smoke. She stayed in bed the entire time she was in the house and he had to cook and bring her meals into her in the bedroom. When she did come out of her room it was to inspect the house to make sure it was spotless. I would have strangled the horrid cow.

Being just a hired (technical) help in some way I see as one of my task to make sure that what our sales staff sells is something I will probably be able to deliver.

Oh, as to snobbery, I'm no snob, a Dutch uncle doesn't need that type of nonsense. Authority and superiority comes natural to us

That's falls under the "say no," category. I've seen weak businessmen and sales staff take on complete and utter nightmares that you could see coming a mile off. ( that's 1.6 kilometres fr you, Rubl ).

I'm the boss in the house, (following in low, soft voice while looking over shoulder) when my wife's not there" but I thought that might give the wrong impression
