Passport renewal: You can now apply for UK passport in JUST 10 minutes online PASSPORT RENEWAL has historically been a painful process, involving lots of waiting around at the Post Office – but all that’s about to change with a smooth new application process. The days of spending great swathes of time at the Post Office trying to renew a passport, armed with myriad paper forms and multiple photo booth snaps – that are still inexplicably “unsuitable” – may finally be over. The government has launched an online passport renewal service which reportedly takes just 10 minutes to complete. Having been piloted with 240,000 people last year by the HM Passport Office, the process is now ready to roll out gradually across the UK. Doubt very much it will be available in Thailand. The actual processing only starts once they physically receive your passport. For some reason the UK government is convinced you have to have your passport with you at all times in Thailand - hence the farcical system in place here at the moment. So, not happening.

Er no, you dont leave your pp at Trendy towers, you supply copies of all pages, and keep your pp with you You have always kept your existing pp while renewal was in process even when you did it at the BE in BKK and even when you sent it to HK, and prior to Trendy when you had to renew in Liverpool |

With the on-line process your physical passport has to be received by the UK, hence its being useless for Thai residents. |

With Internet security or rather lack of the best one can do is allow as much online processing as possible with culmination in 10 - 15 minutes at the Consular Section for check of physical evidence, make finger print scans, etc. The possibility to check online on where in the process your case is, email/SMS when you can come to collect or when there are complications.
Of course, not living or staying in Bangkok may still make this awkward, but proper preparations combined with the online registration system can already save a lot of time.
At the Netherlands Consular Section it worked for me like this and I was impressed with online documentation, online Q&A, two very short visits (apply and collect) and only two weeks between register for appointment to having new passport in hand. Note probably like for a British passport the Netherlands one is produced at one location back home, related to the special IDcard with lots of tricks.
