I have a confession (sob sniff) - I didn't believe in aliens until.....................the night I met the Blether. He is not of this world, was not created in God's own image etc etc

Physicist Brian Cox has weighed in one of astronomy's most curious questions: Given the high probability of extraterrestrial life existing in the endlessly massive universe, why haven't we seen any clear evidence of it? This question was first put forward by Italian physicist Enrico Fermi in the 1950s, in what’s now known as the Fermi paradox. He argued there's a contradiction between the high probability of alien life existing and the total lack of hard evidence that intelligent life has ever evolved outside of Earth. “Where is everybody?” he famously asked. Well, Professor Cox thinks he might have the answer. But it isn’t too cheery. According to the Sunday Times, Cox said: “One solution to the Fermi paradox is that it is not possible to run a world that has the power to destroy itself and that needs global collaborative solutions to prevent that.” Yup, essentially there's a chance aliens wipe themselves out via political turmoil before they ever become advanced enough to launch an interstellar exploration. He went on to warn: “It may be that the growth of science and engineering inevitably outstrips the development of political expertise, leading to disaster. We could be approaching that position.” I tend to take a realist approach to the whole extraterrestrial life thing. I "want to believe" but I can see that as a human species of semi-intelligent life, we are about to move into 2 new phases of life over the next 50 years - one being low power communications and the second being some sort of merge with technology. Current science is looking for radio signals which may only be present for around 200 years of an extraterrestrial intelligence which does skew the Drake Equation somewhat, and then you have the issue of why they haven't spread throughout the galaxy. Well, if there is no way to break the light speed barrier, given the distances needed to travel, they would need giant arks in space to explore the galaxy, and the question would remain, why on earth would someone on an ark visit this planet where the majority of people still believe is some imaginary benefactor living in the sky. Then again, maybe Douglas Adams was right and we're all doomed... ’The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ has this to say about the planet of Golgafrincham: It is a planet with an ancient and mysterious history, in which the most mysterious figures of all are, without doubt, those of the Great Circling poets of Arium. These Circling Poets used to live in remote mountain passes where they would lie and wait for small bands of unwary travellers, circle round them, and throw rocks at them. And when the travellers cried out saying ‘why didn’t they go away and get on with writing some poems instead of pestering people with all this rock-throwing business,’ they would suddenly break off and sing them an incredibly long and beautiful song - in which they told of how there once went forth, from the City of Vassillian, a party of five sage princes with four horses. The first part of the song tells how these five sage princes - who are, of course, brave, noble, and wise - travel widely in distant lands, fight giant ogres, pursue exotic philosophies, take tea with weird gods, and rescue beautiful monsters from ravening princesses, before finally announcing that they have achieved enlightenment and that their wanderings are therefore accomplished. The second, and much longer part, tells of all their bickerings about which one of them is going to have to walk back. It was, of course, a descendent of these eccentric poets who invented this curious tale of impending doom which enabled the people of Golgafrincham to rid themselves of an entire useless third of their population. The other two-thirds, of course, stayed at home and lived full, rich, and happy lives until they were all suddenly wiped out by a virulent disease contracted from a dirty telephone. Meanwhile, Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, and an Ark-load of frozen middle management men have crashed into the prehistoric dawn of a small, blue-green planet circling an unregarded yellow sun at the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral Arm of the Galaxy. After a year or so they convene a meeting to consider their position, which is not, on the whole, good…

Just ask me sirpolee, i like that darmyalakyoya monk travel in space and time. You frown on me, regard me as mad. But you have never traveled through space and time. I learnt the technique from Lafayette Ronald Hubbard. Now if you pay me a tenth (tithe) of your wealth, i will guide you. Now it is not instant, it takes years of strict training. In that time you will feel the benefit of getting closer to the transcendental (if you keep paying), getting ever closer. You will be free to join us spirits if you free your mind of all constrictions. The doubts will persist until you reach the state of true being. Now i had better read that again.

Of continuity? Artists tend to produce their best works when young. There are maturer works which reflect that. It is not fixed. Mahler first and fourth and fifth. Young , torn, loving. Seventh, oh dear.Tragic. There is no ninth, the voodoo. Song of the Earth. Lost you now.

^^^^ couple of posts up, actually buhi I am not in a good mood today, had to go to the hospital to witness yet another somchai who has literally drunk himself to death, we laughed and joked and made comments about see you later, next round is on me, etc etc.
I am under no illusions, next time I see him will be at the local temple for his burning.
Despite what you may read elsewhere, one of the nicest guys you could ever meet, always had a smile on his face, would do anything to help anyone, never violent, an all round good guy.
The local village wheels are already in motion to make sure his daughter completes her uni degree. Unlike what you read elsewhere, there will be no 500k baht send off, no 5 day p**s up with coyote dancers and luk thung singers, this is at his wifes request.

I hear you, i know despite never meeting we sort of have a connection. Sure stuff happens and one day it will happen to you. I guess you know that. "Anthem of the Sun" 1968, was ignored except by those who heard it. You post Hawkwind, they would never have got there without that album. So i jumped to Mahler. The early works shook the establishment, broke all the rules. The later works were sublime in their indifference and of acceptance.Nostalgic. My sin. I hope you live long enough to realise.
