I agree, but when we see such examples in real democracies in the Western World it's difficult to make Developing Countries behave more sensible. Pity really.

Tanks are fine - submarine's? Diesel Subs. Lots of territorial waters and economical importance. Small subs might make sense. Note that in the ongoing Western Task Force against piracy along the Somalian coast the Netherlands has had one of their diesel subs. Could get closer to the coast and act as observation post. Does all this really justify the costs? No idea. A lot is ego, self-importance, perceived or desired status, national goals. Difficult to quantify that. Tongue firmly in cheek I might add "just like the Scottish subs and the Trident upgrade plan"

They'll need to go back to Somalia- two ships have been pirated in the last couple of weeks.

If you want the problems in Thailand to look "not that bad", have a look at the money being spent on defence in the USA and their health care system, and crumbling infrastructure. Does not look near as bad. And I thought the Thai govt bought military toys with chickens ?

However that's OT.

Not typical Thai this. Any government anywhere always finds money for toys. The "toys" are usually free, its the spares and servicing costs that cripple you, read the contract, the constant need to update to latest specs or carry out meaningless modifications and upgrades. Not mentioned that $2 washer you can buy from China Town must be purchased from us at a cost of $2,000 otherwise the contract is invalidated.

Not mentioned that $2 washer you can buy from China Town must be purchased from us at a cost of $2,000 otherwise the contract is invalidated. In many countries the final contract will include the 'lifetime' costs, covering a period foreseen at time of signing. Even with 'reasonable' prices the purchase of the prime equipment can be real peanuts compared with total lifetime costs. Of course with the low series numbers special parts and technical expertise will always have higher prices. Whether you build 10,000 tanks or a few million Toyota cars does make a difference. The Netherlands had 445 Leopard II tanks late 80sh and managed to sell most of them (mostly to Finland I think), but in 2015 16 were taken out of storage and 2 'leased' from the Germans to form a new 18 tank Tank Squadron (with is under German Command). Makes sense and is a pragmatic approach. below-the-turret-ring.blogspot.com/2016/02/germany-and-netherlands-increase.htmlwww.thetrumpet.com/13745-germany-is-taking-over-the-dutch-army
