I know one should not apply logic to Thailand. I live here, my adopted country.
Sometimes, mainly at songkran i do become a grumpy old man.
I remember my youth, when i was one of the ton up lads.Proper bikes then.
We never knew where the police would be. Day or night.
They were mobile as were we.
Cat and mouse.
Plus there was an agreed decorum, we never aimed to hurt any one. I know speed kills, but we were young and showing off our masculinity.
It was not a few days of anarchy, it was everyday. Not that we went out each day to reach the ton. Or drive around with ear splitting noise.There were more things to our lives.
One, Bunny, i remember, he died, tried to take a bend far too fast. Yes just one and i remember. Not one of us ever tried to take that bend at the end of the straight at that speed. We knew it was impossible.

This is becoming a ramble. Time to switch off.
I wrote to my brother in law a few years ago and mentioned Bunny. Brother in law was one of the "gang", yes childish. I became one of the "gang" through him.
When i referred to the Bunny incident, he was shocked that i still remembered. Then the reply, that you too remembered.
Sir Polee was young once of course. It no doubt was his youth that aided him in being a member of the force. He, i surmise, understood and could predict.
I think i would have been an excellent police man. Just as i was an excellent teacher.Not being of moral superiority, but having empathy. Been there, done that.Well not true, i never stole or murdered anyone. But to understand the small things and not over react.
A lesson some of our posters have sadly never learnt.

Those Thai street racers have no agenda.
Well, sex , yes, but it aint that hard (pun) to get.
It is the political task of the social scientist -- as of any liberal educator – continually to translate personal troubles into public issues, and public issues into the terms of their human meaning for a variety of individuals. It is his task to display in his work – and, as an educator, in his life as well -- this kind of sociological imagination. And it is his purpose to cultivate such habits of mind among the men and women who are publicly exposed to him. To secure these ends is to secure reason and individuality, and to make these the predominant values of a democratic society

The trend continues, deaths up to day 5 down just over 16% compared to last year. However more accidents. So if the limiting of travellers in the trucks tray plus seatbelt enforcement wasn't being enforced, it's safe to presume the death rate would have been higher than last year. |
