I was with an old friend I hadn't seen in a long time last night. We had both gone to the same school.
Going through all the old names , what happened to them , where they ended up etc.
Then my friend reminded me of the old English teacher we had - Mr Ryan.
He was a true demon. The problem with the English teacher was he was a serious alcoholic.
He always stunk like cheap whisky and wine , you'd swear he wore the same cheap suit day after day. Then come summer , he'd start sweating. He must have thought no one could smell him , or perhaps he just never cared?
Anyway Mr Ryan looking back on it was not fit to teach. NO child deserves an alcoholic as a teacher. He'd always ramble on and often torment us kids when his anxiety got the better of him - nothing a quick ciggie break didn't help fix for him!
Anyway Mr.Ryan has passed away now. He died in a halfway house down in the port. Still a drunk no doubt and all alone.
Looking back , we should have good memories of our teachers. Sadly our English teacher had ruined that for us with his alcoholism.
Such a shame.

Looking back , we should have good memories of our teachers. Maybe 5th or 6th grade,.... She was absolutely beautiful. I still remember her telling me where she lived (apartments behind the Dadeland Mall) and when traveling to or from the mall I would always wonder which apartment. Still think about her today when by the mall. Wonderful teachers you remember.

For every rock song we made him listen to, we had to listen to one of his classical pieces in return. A thorough Gent.

Wonderful teachers you remember. My French teacher was like that....human to all who passed their O'levels or whatever they were called. All of a sudden you went from being just another twat to someone who was there to study and achieve and the requirement was reciprocated in huge amount. Great teacher of more than simply his subject...someone who had lived life. Others too....the PE teacher who wanted me to stay on so the right wing would be taken care of for another year . The cockhead religious teacher who insisted sex before marriage was a terrible thing and we were all going to hell. (1989 in a Catholic school in Scotland) was always good to goad into giving me lines or a detention which I would never turn up for or do. Got to love some of the clowns.

I believe our maths teacher retired unbeaten at arm wrestling....he was shit at maths though but a good sport. Buhi will no doubt be tickled by my revelation of spending three years in the remedial English class in high school. In fact I sat my A level English from there...that English dept didn't like me at all. I hope you didn't teach there buhi you rascal!

Back to the topic and I can confirm Mr Campbell with the wobbly lip got utterly p**sed one lunchtime before driving us back to the school from a uni visiting day.
I didn't care as I was busy kissin the cutest chick in 5th year in the back of the van.
Those were the good an easy days really.

I owe an enormous debt to four of my teachers, Miss Ivy, Miss Griffith, Harry Naylor and''Spud'' Tatham, alas all sadly gone now. Those teachers as I passed through their lives and classes lit a fire in me that still burns.
They motivated encouraged and created a ''want to learn attitude.'' in me and many others too.
Oh that they were here to see what they made me, but of course I cannot ignore my parents input and back either, they too had a duty and they worked with the teachers concerned.

Golden rule number one, never drink and teach. Have never met a drunken teacher on the job. Knew plenty drinking of an evening when all work completed. That would be well after 8 pm. Of inspirational teachers one stands out. Son of a welsh coal miner, escaped the valley the hard way. History teacher and of course very left wing. Ran the local youth club, where he ceased being a "teacher" to be a sort of father figure. It was he who arranged the then unheard of school trip to Russia. A real mind opener. It was also him who took this young rebel aside and told me straight to stop p**sing about.
Later i learnt he was a broken man. deputy head by that time and having also been in that position i understand why. Every one hates the deputy. The head will delegate all the nasty stuff to the deputy and glory in all the great achievements. My nephew, another rebel, crossed him in those bad years.Broke his own fingers punching him.It would have been inconceivable to hit this giant rugby player in the days i knew him. Nephew was suspended, but later allowed back to the school. My sister nephew's mother was an old favourite of Norman as was i. I was far away by that time, having already left home.

The apple never falls far from the tree buhi! Yep, but it was a good tree. Goodness knows how i would have fared without that mentor. Probably ok, but with eyes closed.

I was lucky, had excellent teachers. The cane was banned in the secondary mod i attended. I did cross several times the school bully teacher Impertinence he termed it. Once i remember clearly, having been summoned for said impertinence and dear Fanny France, the deputy head, saw me awaiting some punishment.
"What have you done now?". "Spoke my mind,".
"Come into my office and let's talk,".
We had a great conversation and the bully teacher got even more egg on his face. Yes , very lucky with such good teachers.
I have had to deal with bad teachers and student teachers. Never easy, but essential that you are an example of excellence. I hope (know) i always was.
Post script. Basher Bill the bully senior teacher, head of discipline, my arch enemy. He had a nervous breakdown, divorce and married my best friend the French teacher. The transformation was incredible.
We actually became friends. He had changed from old school to progressive.

I had a French Teacher, not that great a one as most people forced to teach out of their specialty, one day, he was given hell by my class. One day he snapped as I had not done my homework. Grabbed me round the throat and as a reflex I broke his glasses. He sent me to the head expecting not to see me again. He was right, I didn't, on hearing my story the head said wait a moment, went out to the outer room and called the teacher on the speaker. On arival he was sent home and never seen again. Sacked, Did he deserve it, I am still not sure. Problem was he actually cared about progress.

Lost faith in him a bit when he told my uncle at a parents meeting I should cut down on my smoking.
