Haha my old French teacher and deputy head Mr McKechnie invited me into his room one day and offered me a smoke. Fine chap who was close to retirement, indeed we were his last French higher class. Good friend of my grandfather he ensured my spoken exam resulted in a score of 60/60....basically fluent . I wasn't bad but had never seen Calais.

I will be the first to hold my hand up, yes the teachers were right.
Went to a nondescript secondary modern dump in a sink estate, the teachers tried their best to get us to rise above our expectations of punching out hub caps on a production line, or banging rivets in for the rest of our lives, they were correct.
Should have done and could have done much better academically.
At the end of the day, I dont blame, the teachers or the schools, heck I have gone long past the point of blaming the system, its just the way it was in them days.
Funnily enough, when I head back to jolly ole blighty, its the dummies that seem to have made something of their lives, the spoilt rich brats just seem to have become part of the system.
"Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way"
So true.

Teachers are not priests. They were once. The expectation that they are saints is ludicrous. Are priests? I said i expected excellence and demanded that of myself. That did not mean i could not be found in a night club on a Saturday/Sunday morning p**sed. Just make sure you live far from where you teach. No guarantee, but better than having to be pilloried.

Small town. Same school, the metal work teacher and a geography teacher. Both young, mid twenties. Saturday night, both p**sed at the Chinese restaurant. Details i forget, probably racist, abusing the staff. Police called. Great headline for the local rag. They lost all respect. Yet were just p**sed idiots. Best lesson i ever learnt.

Well Hippity started this thread to put me down. Has he succeeded? As he does not know me, but has his prejudices, perhaps he has. I rest content with the praise and respect i always had when teaching. No never hit a child, well the words and look were enough.Plus the smile, the genuine connection.

Many moons ago I worked in an operating theatre where we anaesthetised kids for tonsillectomies morning and afternoon, roughly 12 a day ages ranging from 4 to around 12 or so. In the six months I did this not one child ever cried in my anaesthetic room. As you say buhi...all about connection. Not many will understand but it is emotionally draining for sure. Moved on to adults...much easier.

Wreck your own life and those closest to you as you are drained. Doctors and teachers are noted as being very susceptible to alcoholism.

I must admit the job I remember most as being special was a job I went to because I had a few weeks to fill in before flying back to Australia from New Zealand. I left a yeaqr later. Someone decided that as I had studied Psych at Uni for a couple of years they would send me to the Psych Ward...A ward with some of the nicest kids anywhere....just a bit more so than most....some were there for having done some pretty terrible things...and many had terrible things done to them. It was a ward that only took kids that may be able to get out into the community at some stage. My job was just being male person in the predominantly female environment... Had a great time cooking chocolate cakes with the kids....and eating them and lots of other things. Not the highest job I have had by far but one of the most special.
My teaching though has been confined to adults thankfully.

As you are probably aware i come from a drama background. I chose teaching over theatre. I always stated that teaching was acting. The curtain rises and you perform. Hell, you have a hangover, had a row with your girlfriend / wife, don't feel like it. Switch off, you perform, you are a professional. Acting is easier, you have a script ( Mike Leigh excepted), and when teaching you interact with your audience. The script goes, you improvise. Now you are in full role play mode. You must deliver. No, you can not take a break, a few minutes off. The pressure is enormous.
So you go to a theatre and the lead actor tells the audience, "Hang on a minute , i need a few minutes out,". Absurd.
You are in character, in role and on a fixed time. Yes each lesson has a fixed duration. You are prepared, know the objectives and will meet them.
So a little toon:

The end of that Nirvana song shows a cleaner mopping. Kurt Cobain said that person is him. Kurt left school early and the only job he could get was as a cleaner ,back at the same school he just left. He found it humiliating.

Doctors susceptible to alcoholism? Not in Australia as far as I know. Most of my immediate and extended family are Doctors including my father and sister. Strangely, they are all rather healthy. Edit. According to google it is a UK thing.
