Just about all the 21 year old girls I know are at uni and still living with their parents, they will end up marrying guys they meet at uni in a few years time.
From what I have observed up my way, the average age for girls to get married is about 26-28, to a guy about 28-32.
They will have met at uni, graduated and secured decent jobs, got a promotion/pay rise, and started saving for marriage.

Our soi is interesting for its diversity.
In fact it is three connected sois; first soi all private detached but modest houses; then ours the upper part mainly small cheap apartments , with many migrant workers on short time contracts,the lower part, divided by the cross connecting soi (where the shop is, the best place for observation)is where our house is located, grander detached houses with large gardens.
The other soi, only accessible from our soi at the junction where the shop is, a far seedier and also very mixed place.
Its location is an ideal place for "dealings" as it cannot be entered without the guardian noting.
I do not ever go that way.
One of the richest and most influential families own most of the property there.
Enough said.

Of my grandmother, a ramble.
I see old folk in the soi, hell i am one of them.
From my early experiences with my grannie, discovered that truth that young children do not get.
Buddhism.
That she was once a child, a young beauty in her teens and a mother of my father and his younger sister.
Yes, obvious , but not to a five year old .
I only saw an old lady , who doted on me.
As i matured, our relationship never diminished.
I wanted to know more.
She was willing to tell.

Some old folk around here, Bett for one, can relate to me of their childhood in Bangkok of sixty years ago.

She died two years ago.

Couple of observations from my time in the soi.

These girls from upcountry come to Bkk and quickly suss out that Johnny Whizzbang may well be a big shot in some upcountry village in the middle of nowhere, but in Bkk just another face in the crowd, a nobody, these girls soon move on to better and bigger things, best of luck to them.

The stories these Thai men can tell dont differ too much from the bile that is posted elsewhere, usually to do with the girls mother and her expectations.
Littlen Lek is quickly kicked to the kerb, no local Thai man wants another mans cast offs for fear of losing face.

Not mentioned, the at least half a dozen Thai girls I know, hardworking, non drinking non smoking etc etc, the sort of girls these farang losers come looking for but will never find in the bars of Soi Cowboy etc etc, aka the hind legs of the elephant.

Well this must get a mention.
Flagged down a taxi this afternoon.
Was with wife.
What a conversation.
The driver looked old, very old.
His driving was fine, no spectacles.
Brand new Toyota.
"How old are you?".
"Eighty one,".
Then discovered he used to drive for Patana, but was retired as is standard at sixty.
Good for him.
I no longer drive, i know my sight is poor, peripheral vision, due to wearing glasses.
So eighty is the new sixty.

Not so, he was not a curb crawler.
I doubt he knew his real age.
Old he sure was.
Looked much older than me.
But then i hansum man.
