The boot sequence to start the damned thing up involved setting all the registers, I/O channels and loading the boot addresses into memory, it was a 73 step process of button pushing, the site record for which was 47 seconds and looked really impressive when done quickly. Whenever the boss would bring visitors by, he'd always tell us to shut it down and boot it up again, Japanese visitors even applauded once! I only really started in 1981 at the Computer Division of Philips Electronics. There were still a few P-800s and colleagues who could set the bootstrap from memory. 16-bit address, 16-bit value, set, next. Plus the flicker of the address and data lights. The server also had real core memory. I only ever booting from pico cassettes or 8" floppy disks and later 2.5Mb removable harddisks. Those were the days. You've never lived until you've punched cards by hand and corrected your errors by wetting your finger and sticking the bits back in the mistakes.

I did that while studying Math at the University of Technology Delft in the 70-tish. Mostly using punch terminals for that though. I've seen people dropping their pack of cards and thanking the Deities for having listened to the teachers and used the last rows for a sequence number.

We were so poor we didn't have punch terminals. just a hammer and a punch, that was back in the days when men were men and women were women and neither one wanted to be the other.

You're a Yorkshire man aren't you? Yes, but I want it made clear that I've never had any form of relationship with sheep, not even a platonic one.

Sadly that is so the previous millennium, we have already gone from gender neutral to gender fluid. When I say we, obviously I refer to society as a whole and not referring to myself and my companions.

Soooo, from gender positive, to gender neutral, to gender fluid, I wonder what's next.....can't people find better things to think about and do with their time? And why, back in the day, did we never concern ourselves with such issues, everything was all about birds and beer, which seems more fun than this nonsense. Perhaps we were not enlightened, didn't have sufficiently open minds.....thanks goodness!

No names mentioned of course but there are some on here who regard others as still not having open minds. In fact they would laugh uproariously at the thought, and they are the ones responsible for Britannia's downfall, loss of the empire etc. Time for my blood pressure medication.

Complete nonsense of course, my mind, for example, is so open that you can see from one side clear through to the other, without anything obscuring the line of sight.

Of course, an open mind might have certain disadvantages in the rainy season. As for gender fluency, not my problem. I'll sit down with a and watch it pass.

The advantage of a forum is that free thinkers are allowed to post their views for all to see.
So I'm told.
In Bangkok the coldest time of day is 7 am, at least according to the weather forecast that I see. Effing nuisance that.

The last few days I really wonder if I should put on a shirt, I mean this is Thai Wintertime and other people here wear winter jackets.

He seems for the most part a jolly decent sort, but no shirt these cold mornings well you have to wonder if he is er best not to say it.
I have just watched a programme about Glyn Dix, English nutter, so I nay be over-reacting.
I see that temperatures look due to rise 3 to 4 degrees by the end of the week, so soon these may seem to be the good old days.

Well, I'm sure our Yorkshireman would call it 'nippy' at the most. I mean, come on, 18C is a wee bit more than you'd have in jolly old England at the moment.
