I feel an update is needed on this thread! I've now been in Mongolia close to a year, I have no intention of making an early exit and have become very much at home here. School has been full-on but enjoyable and I'm treated well. Students ended up settling down and mostly behaving pretty well- as always enjoyable to see them grow academically and socially. Done some trips- went up to a frozen lake for an ice festival Spring and summer are much greener months! School took up us to some swanky resort at the end up term- went hiking with an ex-Russian soldier, the admin lady and an 22 year old bottle of single malt- who needs maps and water. Nice views

Good to see that the move you made was and is a positive one. One should always grasp any chances. I have throughout both my professional and private life in its many forms.
See a corner go round it, , see an open door go through. Never missed a chance.eighty per cent of those chances were , great I glad I took the chance, ten percent, well that was bollocks dropper, the final ten per cent was, what a ducking fisaster.
But I do not go looking back thinking, I wonder if. Memories are precious moments and the keepsakes of life. Keep exploring Seb .

I have a year left on this contract, further exploring is the only solid reason I can come up with not to sign for another two years. I guess for the right package I'd move back to Thailand. I have never been to Africa, an entirely new continent does hold a bit of appeal.

It seems you have found a place where you are wanted and valued. Glad to see you have not withered away with the cold.

Decided to get another course under my belt, long winter so plenty of cold evenings to hits the books, etc. Going to be a busy year, primary school play, sports day and the usual plus possibly mentoring new teachers. I should have done this course when I lived in Thailand or Myanmar, would have made way for logistical sense. If the dates don't fit in Mongolia then I could, in theory, move back to Thailand for a year to do this. The course seems to fit around Thai term dates, which seems where most of the cohort teach.

I am lucky to be in a profession that provided exploring, travel etc etc. A word to the wise, your 20s and 30s will fly by, in your 40s, you seriously need to consider your next move, at this stage some are planning on retirement, others. the penny drops, they have no retirement plans in place, I know many guys in their 50s just waiting for their job to be axed so they cant pick up a pay off and early retirment, others are shitting themselves. One guy I know retired here at 60, after 5 years his money ran out, now back in the Middle East at age 67, working for peanuts and he is thankful, make sure you dont end up like that.

Already on it, part of the reason for moving away from Thailand was to pay those 10 years of NIC back, done that and somehow ended up of the property market. Need to think of a private pension scheme at some stage.

Goodbye summer, hello Mongolian winter round 2! Heating is back on now, which is a blessing as it is getting pretty cold at night again.

That's an interesting image there Seb. Now question time. Speak up boy, don't be shy. Is it perhaps an economy cremation package or is it perhaps a local version of the old English custom of throwing potatoes in the fire to cook them in their skins, and the actions of the monks is the pulling their potatoes out of the fire? The attending chappies from the local fire department perhaps standing by to ensure said potatoes are not done to a charcoal wafer style munchie?

haha, so there were folks writing little notes of what had gone wrong since the last summer or simply writing wishes and hopes on bits of paper, these were then wrapped up in mutton fat and tossed on the fire. I did worry about those robes though, they did not look flame retardent to me.

At some Octoberish/Novembery stage, I am going to be asked if I want to sign another 2-year contract. Undecided. I like living here, even don't really mind the deep freeze of winter, but the pollution is a bit of a concern, it's no joke. School is fine, I guess, although there has been a bit more micro-managing this year, but that is a moot point, it's nothing terrible or overbearing. Life is pretty easy and comfortable here, but the second year is slightly less adventurous, which is to be expected.
There is a lot I do miss about SE Asia and warmer climes though. The miserable buggers on "Ajarn FB" often moan about their lot teaching in Thailand but I rather enjoyed it, there again, never did language schools or the trad TEFL gigs, so who knows. Just thinking about the food in Myanmar angers me slightly, so moving back there is not on the cards...pretty petty,eh?

Well there's always the challenge of Frinton on Sea, or possibly Bognor Regis. Go on, live dangerously, put some spice in your life.

My old Gran used to live in Kirby Cross which is just outside Frinton, she was 105 when she finally kicked off. Grandpa fought in the trenches in WWI and used to drive a coach and four (horses) around the City of London, an early form of taxi. Frinton was their dream location, it had everything and they were both deliriously happy there, except they used to refer to it as deaths waiting room and then laugh, and that was sixty years ago.....the world was a different place then.
