Ahh the Madrid....nice pizzas there but the real joy were always the staff....like being welcomed by family and genuinely so too. Times and staff change. I am told by those who know that to get a decent pizza now you have to specify extra cheese. I think there are only perhaps three staff who have been there more than a few years, as I tend to prop the bar up at the door end I do not know those at the khazi & kitchen end. Staff are friendly enough but do not seem to have enough experience of customers to understand how to act. Yes the Madrid bar has had its best days....time moves on and who knows where the Bangkok scene will go?

With another cod-Irish bar opening in Silom on the 1st Nov it looks like the scene will be staying around there. But it will be more like Benidorm than Bangkok, catering more to the market going grockles than the likes of us.

Never been to Benidorm and hardly ever to cod-Irish in Bangkok I had to look up 'grockle'. Seems "people showing boorishness and clownish behaviour". I guess that means I'll not be checking the new place

Oldie hosted some dear friends around KSR for Songkran some years back. The powder was more a problem than the beer. They haven't spoken to me since.

And I might add it was their choice not mine. Lesson learned, never offer to show any <k**t> Thailand. Let them figure it out for themselves.

I still enjoy the quiet beer on KSR. The p**sed manbun brigade and their tall stories impressing the newbies whilst the old man sits in the corner smiling to himself. I find service can be slow on KSR. Am not one who likes a siesta between beers. What actually is there on KSR that would tempt me there? I go drinking with the Somchais up my way, I aint pestered by hilltribes people trying to flog me croaking frogs, Cambodians trying to flog me 3 foot high elephants, massage parlour touts, rip off dvds, viagra and gawd knows what else. Too be honest your average farang in Bkk in these areas was identified by an astute poster on here as nothing more than "social spastics" they cant speak Thai and even fewer can read it, they are of no use or help to me whatsoever, ask them about the cost of a local electrician or plumber, ask them how much it costs to get your septic tank emptied, clueless. There is no way I am climbing 20 feet up a ladder to cut branches and dispose of them, get the locals in to do the job and pay the local rates.

These days I prefer quality over quantity. Cant be assed heading over to the other side of town to drink with the man bun hipsters. Do not spend enough time in BKK lately to try new places (when I do I wish I hadn't) tend to stick to the old haunts that still exist. Speaking of cheap the Madrid has a happy hour 4-7 pm, 80 baht all local beers. Sadly for this lovely old bar the lovely old customers seem long gone and due to lack of demand barfines are no longer available.Sounds exactly what I am looking for hassle free service and no lady drink whores. Theres a bar I use in Pattaya, the most popular serving wench is a butch Tom, dressed in workmans boots, lumberjack shirt and a Fred Flintstone haircut, she looks after about 3 tables, its amusing to watch, as soon as one table empties, the other patrons move tables to be served by her, she must easily be clearing at least 1000 baht per day in tips. Sailor Bar another no nonsense joint, the big mamasan runs a tight ship, best of luck trying to bf one of the serving wenches, . Another bar, most of the staff are grannies, doubt there is any serving wench under 50, its that popular, that depending on the time of day you go, the punters are stood outside drinking on the soi waiting to get in.

Reminds me of a comment I saw the other day on the OAP forum from a guy talking about home improvements. He stated openly he knew he would get ripped off either way blah blah blah..... My immediate reaction was the fook I would....pay the correct price for the job done same as in the UK. They leave their brains either with customs or their ex-wives back home.

Probably says more about his mrs, . I remember years ago, some coffin dodger was proudly proclaiming he uses sign language to talk to the locals, this is after living here for at least 10 years.

Was wandering around the Mall today, wow oh effin wow, some of those khun ying types are well doable.
