With another cod-Irish bar opening in Silom on the 1st Nov it looks like the scene will be staying around there. But it will be more like Benidorm than Bangkok, catering more to the market going grockles than the likes of us. Great stuff, keeps the great unwashed in one area, just what Bkk needs another plastic paddy bar? Can someone please tell me, why do the shebeens I have used in Ireland look nothing like these plastic fake drinking houses? Been in many a paddy bar in New York, they look nothing like these faux paddy bars, mind you what do you expect, the weary traveller inbound from Europe probably thinks the paddy bar in Dubai is authentic, they are about as real as a soi cowboys whores smile.

Oldie hosted some dear friends around KSR for Songkran some years back. The powder was more a problem than the beer. They haven't spoken to me since. 'friends' you said? Maybe you've been lucky to discover their real nature.

Indeed, used to p**s me off some prick I spoke to in the snack bar about 10 years ago thinks I am his big mate, oh we are coming to Thailand, maybe you can show us around. I always reply, let me know what hotel you are staying in, and if I have the time I might come down and see you.

Do not spend enough time in BKK lately to try new places (when I do I wish I hadn't) tend to stick to the old haunts that still exist. Speaking of cheap the Madrid has a happy hour 4-7 pm, 80 baht all local beers. Sadly for this lovely old bar the lovely old customers seem long gone and due to lack of demand barfines are no longer available.Sounds exactly what I am looking for hassle free service and no lady drink whores. ............. Another bar, most of the staff are grannies, doubt there is any serving wench under 50 When I first came here the Pattaya style was (in theory anyway) that the ladies were non-pestering but available if required. I still know one like that and there are not many in the place below forty. I am sure there must be more, anyone telling?

The reason why I stopped drinking in Soi Cowboy was because of the constant pestering. Years ago I used to enjoy a Sunday afternoon down the Cowboy, just sipping on my suds and playing pool but now you can’t sit down with a pint without being tapped on the shoulder asked 10+ times “You buy me drink?”. On top of that I got peeved with being disturbed while playing pool by Indians selling copy watches. Although I no longer partake in pay for play, one of my company’s visiting customers told me that he was getting quotes of Thai Baht 6,000 for short time, bloody ridiculous. The 2 week millionaire tourists have ruined the place and to think that we were once more worried that the Japs would force the prices higher.

It's not a bad job when you weigh it up.
Not Oprah Winfrey wage but certainly more than maybe 95% of farang women make in their employment.

Funnily enough Bangers nowadays has fewer and fewer conventional western style bars I would want to drink in.....I prefer the shebeen type Thai spots or high end places such as Smalls....but I only go to Smalls when the tab is being picked up.

Western style pubs generally depend on the drinkers or the staff as to whether you would be likely to go back. Hanrahans seems popular but it is just a passing trade place, a room full of strangers. In this genre I sometimes go in the Black Swan, get a bit of crack there on occasion. Chequers to me never quite makes it, which is a pity. I find the staff chatty and friendly in the Bus Stop bar. Now I think of it not much grabs me in bkk anymore. The FCC would be ok if it had a few customers, very nice place but. I like a little jap eating and drinking house in Thonglor and that is about it.

The Amari at Don Muang has a nice little bar with a dozen chairs tucked away on the ground floor. Place to unwind quietly after a flight. Otherwise I just have a few beer poolside wherever we are staying. About it really.

The new Black Swan is just too narrow unfortunately and has none of the charm of the old place. The world still gets put to rights in the Crossbar from time to time however....hic!
