tbv, the word you couldnt remember for know, is ทราบ, saap, polite and proper Thai. I wouldnt worry about writing Thai, learn how to read it, it will save you a fair few $$$$, I can write, but apart from my name and address, thats all I have written in years.
I will guarantee, your mrs like mine, adopts a different style of speaking when dealing with officaldom than what she uses in the soi or at the market.
Its almost like having to learn two languages.

Thanks. I just want to learn the Thai (for now) that I will be speaking, and that will be spoken to me. That sounded so simple, but every book seems to teach otherwise. If all goes as planned I do not plan on being in immigration or formal Thai settings too often at all. Not that this is an excuse for not learning that "dialect", but right now I would like to actually learn what I will hear and say, on the streets. It sounds so funny saying that... "I want to learn the words I actually need", but someone needs to tell the educators, somehow, somewhere.

^^^ I liked your vlog about cooking, , its a dying art, why cant these women cook. They dont have the time, I watch the grab, lineman and get motocys whizzing up the soi every night. Guy up my way coining in at least 1,000 baht per day, buys 20 fish for 50 baht each, starts cooking them at 4pm, 100 baht per grilled fish, wheels his gear up the soi about 8pm, income 2000 baht per day, outlay, 1000 baht per day. A woman who cant cook is no use to me. Next problem, rote learning, they refuse to be adventurous, this is what i was taught, this is what i will stick to. next ploblem, what your average farang thinks is thai food is nothing like what your average thai eats on a daily basis, your average thai aint eating mattsaman curries etc on a daily basis, more like pla ra. Another favourite subject of mine, what exactly is thai food? Isaan, notheren, or southern food?

I need to speak more Thai for that one though. I have been trying to use words right after i learn them. Beats staring at them. Sometimes they stick. I need more practice speaking. I got on conversation exchange, which lines up english speakers wanting to learn thai with thai apeakers who want to learn english, and you can skype or meetup or whatever. This would be a great dating app if one were single. i have mine set to only speak to males of course. The wrath that would come down if i was skyping with a thai women... I have not actually used it yet but it seems very good. I know i need to get out and speak more, i just feel like the average interaction here in thailand is very short and purposefully curt.

Thai food, , here is what the locals eat, most farangs wont recognise it as Thai food. For the record, I eat none of the above, I prefer southern Thai food. Dating site, , the best dating site I have been on was the Thai language schools, for a single man its like hitting the motherlode, Japanese, Taiwanese, Korean etc etc, all these women spoke perfect English, were educated etc etc and didnt want your money or give you a sick buffalo story. Got to love Thailand, none of the PC BS of the west, one of the schools had a policy of only employing married thai women teachers or toms, they were fed up with losing teachers, the farangs were taking them away and marrying them, for the single thai women teachers it was like a dating site.

tbv, I understand your frustratons, you dont get taught this in school, how to address thai people, depending on the situation, half the time I dont know what language i am speaking, but its relevant to the situation. Go to the market, old muslim woman, sawadee neet, apparently neet is the word for older sister, what language it is, I dont have a clue. Go to the next stall, muslim guy, sawadee bang, instead of sawadee pee, bang is the muslim word for pee or khun. On to the chinese, , go into one of those chinese shops that sell everything, sawadee jay. ask your mrs to tell you what sia tbv means instead of pee tbv or khun tbv. What chance to we dumb farang buffalo stand, .

Indeed the Thai language is a linguistic cross country hurdling jaunt through verbal social exchanges. Bloody good fun though, mind you I do get a bit confused (understatement) when at home in our village in Surin.

I have completely succumbed to making a mistake every 4 seconds when I speak, not understanding anything, and answering the wrong question asked of me at least half the time. I figure at the end of it all, I can laugh about the fun times i had when i could not put two words together.
I will tell you there is another added element when holding a camera in someone's face. There is just too much going on between paying and videoing and trying to speak and listen.
My plan was to book worm for about a month to get a decent foundation down. Then start speaking a lot more. I am at that point about now and sure can feel the need for the actual speaking practice. A lot of words are there but they still wont "work" yet.
I will get it. What i need at this point is a lot of stupid mistakes.

^^^^^ repetition repetition repetition, thats the only way it sunk in for me.
Yes been there done that, made monumental ferk ups, thankfully the good natured thais took it all in their stride and laughed it off.
One of my most famous screw ups was telling a girl, nom yai (big tits) instead of hom yai (onion).
Rome wasnt built in a day, it will come, dont worry about it, you have the ability with your vids to rewind and replay and find out where you ferked up, I didnt.
