I am eagerly awaiting my free online lesson from LEARNDUTCH.COM, (as advertised on fb) so that I can prove I embrace diversity and am fully multicultural. Fit looking tart in the advert, if you ignore the specs.
Hope I do.better than when I had a go at learning Afikaans, they seemed under the impression that to be serious about it you had to have a short back and sides and wear a scruffy safari suit.

Such nobel attempt to do already warms the cockles on my heart. I'm really touched BTW the website (i.e. www.learndutch.com ) has two buttons on the top. One with "I'm a beginner" and one with "Do the Leveltest". Which one did you press if any?

Big sigh..... The poster asked, "give me the very short version of what brexit actually is." To which I replied, "Here's the high level view in a nutshell".

I'm working in Bangkok in the IT environment at banks. With the juniors I might nod my head, with some of the higher level staff I may give a wai. Mostly in response. "Mostly in response" ... Well of course sir. The lower person wais first
BTW Is something eating our emojis? There used to be one that bowed down so the L-O-L one wil have to do. And the R-O-F-L (my favourite) doesn't roll any more

Wasn't the bowing down one to 'honour' a football as in 'King Football' when we had the WC? Maybe it just "didn't come home"

You used the words King and football in the same sentence this chap sprung to mind.

Not guilty for once. Don't ever remember doing it even in the very early days, it just looked so unnatural and uncomfortable. Perhaps also I did not meet any "ups" drinking in the Dog's Bollocks. Why does that not surprise me. A sad reflection of the state of the hosptality industry these days, the "chubby" one should have been off his fat lard ass like a shot to wai you and your entourage on arrival, standards, standards, where have they gone?

My mrs refuses to wai these days, unless its absolutely necessary, she views it as nothing more than a sign of subservience and serfdom, an outdated concept. It should be borne in mind, this is bangkok and not upcountry with its traditional values, I hardly see anyone wai anyone in bkk unless its a formal situation. Not mentioned, she spent a lot of time overseas and had her eyes opened, its hard to put the genie back in the bottle.

BY now Bangkok also has a few generations of 'real' Bangkokians and from what I can see it may even be done in the family. Mostly it's restricted to a form of business relations. If there's a meeting with some high level potential customers and my colleagues 'wai' I'll do as well. Probably less 'formal' than my colleagues but as all can see I'm 'just a farang' PS of course, now close to 64 I 'm mostly the oldest person around. Gives me an 'edge'

Forgot to mention, love reading the racist rants posted elsewhere about the indians, , they are thai and they own all the land where you are drinking in lower suk. The muslims, why do i need to hear the call to prayer, , you bought a condo on muslim land, they were here long before you and your upcountry slapper from nakorn nowhere moved to bkk. I know muslims in pattanakarn that are multi millionaires, dollars that is not baht, i was talking to one. one day and asked him why he didnt sell his land, his answer, the land appreciates faster in values than the set, its not about me, its about those that follow, wow, I shook his hand in agreement, these guys get it.

Just returned safe and no more or less sound tham when I left a few hours ago. Witnessed one Scottish gentleman give the staff (who seemed to be friends of his wife) a wai on entering one bar. Up to him.
Yes plenty of wealthy Indians and muslims, twas ever thus, causes me no problems. Life goes on.
